Today's spotlight falls on Alfred John Bates, Samuel's third son, born in 1870. He married Bertha Sprague, as pictured. Alfred studied at Allegheny College, becoming a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity located directly above Highland Guesthouse on the opposite side. Alfred took the reins of the Edward T Bates music store after Edward's death, steering it for over four decades. Alfred passed away at Meadville Medical Center in 1933 from complications related to appendicitis.

Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting Heidi, Samuel P. Bates' great-great-granddaughter. She shared captivating pictures from the 1800s and her extensive family history, tracing roots back to 13th-century London. Given the upcoming Meadville Home and Garden tour on June 20th, it's an ideal time to showcase her generous gifts to this beautiful home. Over the next few days, we'll be featuring different members of her family. Today, we highlight Edward T. Bates, Samuel's firstborn son, who pursued music due to a heart condition. He established a music store in 1880 on Chestnut Street, where he sold pianos. Following Edward's death in 1889 at 32, his brother Alfred managed the store until his passing in 1933, ensuring the Edward T. Bates music store remained a prominent fixture for over 50 years.

Highland Guesthouse loves hosting rehearsal dinners on our front porch and very soon we will have an actual Event Center that can seat up to 50 people inside. Last year we had the privilege of hosting rehearsal dinners on our 53 foot porch. Many people rent the entire guesthouse (for family, bridesmaids, or guests) which now boasts 9 bedrooms and choose to have the rehearsal dinner and champagne brunch on Sunday at the Guesthouse. If you are getting married at the The Harper Event Venue or Davenport Cidery & Winery we are only 2 miles away and this summer we will begin our shuttle service to and back for our guests. For a very unique experience, a lower cost and you pick the caterer and supply the alcohol and we do the rest.
