We’ve never really introduced ourselves and, given that it’s Pride Month, there feels like no better time.

We’re Phil and Bret, an out and proud gay couple, and the owners of the Mendocino Tree House.

We’ve shared countless photos of the forest, the ocean, slow mornings, and the little moments that make this place feel special. But we’ve rarely shared much about ourselves because we’ve always believed the Tree House was never really about us. It’s about creating a space where people can find rest, joy, and the safety and comfort that only nature can provide in her beautiful way.

But this month feels like an important time to say something more.

For many Q***r people, especially our BIPOC and Trans family, the ability to live an ordinary life openly and safely is still being questioned, challenged, and in some cases, actively taken away.

That’s exactly why Pride matters.

Q***r people are partners. Business owners. Travelers. Dreamers. The people arguing over paint colors, making coffee in the morning, folding laundry, and trying to build meaningful lives together just like everyone else.

Mendo Tree House was designed not just to sit in nature, but to live alongside it. 🌲

Built around a living redwood, the home was created with the intention of feeling connected to the landscape rather than separated from it.

The forest becomes part of the experience — changing with the weather, the light, the fog, the seasons, and the sounds around you.

You don’t just look at nature here from a window.
You wake up with it. Move with it. Slow down with it.

A place where architecture and wilderness exist together quietly, without competing for attention.

“But what will I do all weekend?”
Less than you think.
More than you realize.

You’ll wake with the sun filtering through the trees.
Walk quiet forest trails.
Wander the village.
Browse bookstores and galleries.
Watch waves roll into Big River Beach.
Warm up in the sauna. Soak beneath the stars.
Cook a simple meal.
Read a few chapters.
Finish conversations that somehow never happen at home.

The funny thing about slowing down is that it often feels unfamiliar at first.

Then somewhere between the forest and the sea, between the morning coffee and the evening fire, you remember what it feels like to be fully present.

No packed itinerary.
No endless notifications.
No pressure to be productive.
Just space to breathe.

And sometimes, that’s exactly what we’ve been needing all along

One of our favorite things about the redwood forest is the moss.

Blanketing branches, tree trunks, and the forest floor in shades of green, it turns the landscape into something almost otherworldly.

It thrives in the cool coastal air, helping retain moisture and supporting the delicate balance of life that makes these forests so special.

It’s easy to overlook, but once you notice it, you’ll see it everywhere—quietly reminding us that nature’s most beautiful details are often the smallest ones.

Some places aren’t designed to fill your time, but to give a little of it back to you.
A slower morning.
A longer conversation.

A quiet moment beside the fire with nowhere else to be.
No crowds. No shared walls. No rushing from one thing to the next.

Just towering redwoods, fresh forest air, crackling fires, and enough quiet to hear yourself again.

The Mendocino Tree House isn’t for everyone.
It’s for those craving space and stillness.
A softer pace and a deeper connection to the natural world.
A place to slow down. To reconnect. To simply be.

Life is everywhere, if you let yourself notice it.

In the laughter that lingers a little longer than expected.
In the quiet shift of the seasons, leaves changing slowly, almost without asking for attention.

In the way the sun moves through the trees, dancing, soft and constant, marking time in the gentlest way.

It’s in the small, fleeting moments that don’t ask for anything, yet give so much.

A reminder that life isn’t something we have to chase. It’s already here, unfolding all around us

Not a checklist.
Not another routine to perfect.
Just a few gentle reminders from the forest.

To slow down a little. To notice more. To let life feel softer and less rushed.

At Mendocino Tree House, the days unfold differently.

Mornings begin slowly, meals take their time, conversations linger, and nature quietly reminds you that not every moment needs to be productive to be valuable.

Sometimes the reset we need is not another packed itinerary of things to do on vacation, it’s simpler than we think.
