Trees were delivered and planted yesterday. They make a big difference in the look and feel around the palapa. Once they get established, they’ll provide nice cover for the birds and butterflies and much needed shade.

My love/hate relationship with climbing milkweed shifted a bit in the positive direction today when the flowers attracted this enormous beauty: a Mexican Tarantula-hawk! Here with a Queen butterfly for proper scaling. The hum of its labored flight was louder than a hummingbird! We've had plenty of its flashy, orange-winged cousins, but this one is a new bug for Blue Bunting Lodge.

Today's project, getting one more bed finished for the north butterfly garden! Hopefully, there'll be something to show for it in time for the Texas Butterfly Festival this November!

Found this tiny flash of scarlet on the back wall of the house this week. I'm still learning my odes (Odonates, or dragonflies and damselflies,) but recognized him as Amelia's Threadtail, one of the South Texas specialties. Odonate maven Cindy McKee confirmed the ID, and further confirmed that it's a "nice yard bug!"
