Another season behind us. These people are the reason Boondocks is what it is. We love each and every one of them.

A spider large enough to dominate a wall became a tolerated roommate in one Australian home rather than a target for extermination.

In 2020, Cairns resident Jake Gray said his family had watched the female huntsman, later named Charlotte, grow for about a year.

There was a practical reason she stayed.

Gray told IFLScience that huntsman spiders were welcome in his home because they ate cockroaches, acting as natural pest control.

Charlotte reportedly moved between rooms, reached roughly 15 centimeters across, and even ate an Asian house gecko.

Gray said his family avoided broad toxic pest sprays, while naming the spider helped ease his children’s nerves.

The Australian Museum notes that huntsmans often enter homes, can span up to 15 centimeters, and are not considered dangerous spiders.

For Gray, the enormous spider was not an intruder to remove, but pest control that happened to have eight legs.
