Looking to hike the Fiery Furnace?
Look no further!

Hiking Fiery Furnace requires a reservation year-round that needs planning ahead.
Reservations are available to book through Recreation.gov under “tickets and tours”.
Tickets are available 7 days in advance of the tour date at 8 AM MT for the Self-Guided Fiery Furnace Exploration Tour and for Ranger-Guided Fiery Furnace Loop Tours.
Reservation holders must pick up their tickets at the visitor center information desk.
Self-guided permits must be picked up at one of the following times on the day before or day of your hike: 8, 8:30, 9, 9:30, 10am, 2, 2:30, 3, or 3:30 pm.

Just in time for those fall river trips!

With monsoonal moisture and lower temps moving into the region, fire bans are set to lift across southeast Utah at midnight on September 4. This includes Canyonlands National Park and the Green River corridor in Labyrinth and Stillwater canyons.

This fire ban has been in effect since June this year, as part of an effort to combat an extremely active fire season fueled by high temperatures, high winds, and low humidity.

With the band lifted, please enjoy your campfires responsibly!

Use a durable metal fire pan to completely contain the fire, as well as all of its coals and ash.
🔥
Burn only driftwood! Don't gather or cut any wood from above the high water line.
🔥
Never leave a fire unattended.
🔥
Completely douse fires with water, pack all visible fire waste/debris (burnt wood and charcoal) out of the backcountry and dispose of it properly.

Attention: There have been bear sightings on the Slickrock Bike Trail, Hell's Revenge 4x4 trail and in Mill Creek this week. Recently Utah DNR captured and relocated bears that have come into Moab. Bears are coming down from the mountains because late spring frosts and the drought have reduced their food supplies. After years of planning, grant writing, trail construction and coordination across county and agency lines, Mud Springs is about to do what it was designed in part to do: host large-scale youth mountain bike races expected to draw thousands of riders and supporters.

Dead Horse Point is actually right in the heart of Canyon Country, and it’s known for all of the deep canyons, cliffs, and incredible rock formations you can see throughout the area.

You can also see layers upon layers of exposed sedimentary rock throughout the canyons. 🪨 Each layer tells a little piece of the story of how this landscape formed.

Water and wind are two of the natural forces that have helped carve and shape the canyons around Dead Horse Point over time. 💨💧

The landscape around the park also features broad, flat rock benches and mesas that give you those wide-open views of the surrounding cliffs, canyons, and mountains.

So, the next time you’re standing at one of the overlooks looking out across the canyons, take a second to look at those layers in the rock. 🏜️ Each layer represents a different period of geologic time, which is pretty cool to think about!

Have you seen this plant before? 🌱

This plant is known as Mormon Tea or (𝘌𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘥𝘳𝘢 𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘴)

Mormon Tea is a rugged evergreen shrub native to the American Southwest.

Its appearance is pretty unique. It’s an upright shrub that can grow up to about 5 feet tall, with slender, jointed, bright green stems. These stems perform photosynthesis for the plant.

Its leaves are reduced to tiny, scale-like leaves that grow in pairs at the joints, or nodes, and quickly dry up and fall off.

Mormon Tea can also be made into a tea. Various indigenous people use the plant for traditional purposes, and Mormon pioneers also used it to make tea when other sources of tea were limited.

If you're hiking around Dead Horse Point State Park, pay close attention—you'll probably find some Mormon Tea growing throughout the park! 🌵
