Mother Nature’s Fireworks
We hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July Celebration in 2026. We know that our campers did!
At Lake Alexander our natural fireworks carry on the entire month of July. We have a wetland environment that fireflies love. Every evening they rise from the fields and fill the night and trees with a gorgeous glow.
A few fun facts about Fireflies: Fireflies
Fireflies aren't actually flies
Surprise! They're beetles. Yep, legit beetles with a flair for the dramatic. Their glow is a type of light called bioluminescence.
Why do they glow?
The main reason fireflies flash is for romance. Different species have their own flashing patterns and the males fly around showing off their blink game. If a female sees one she likes, she flashes back.
Fireflies are disappearing
Unfortunately, firefly populations around the globe are facing threats. Light pollution, habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change dim their glow. Since fireflies rely on specific environments (wetlands, meadows, forests) and need dark skies to communicate, all those extra streetlights and shrinking green spaces make it harder for them to survive and reproduce.
There are ways you can help:
Turn off outdoor lights when you're not using them.
Avoid using pesticides in your garden.
Plant native grasses and flowers.
Protect wetlands and natural water sources
