Apple season in Bedford runs through the end of October, and a morning at Johnson Apple Orchard Bedford makes for a lovely fall Saturday. Let the kids pick their own, say hello to the 15-foot Johnny Appleseed, and pick up a bag of feed at the farm store for the animals. The Johnson family has been growing apples there since 1919, and it's a sweet tradition to be part of. Dogs are welcome, too.

The SML Charity Home Tour has opened private waterfront homes to the public every Columbus Day weekend since 1991. It is run entirely by volunteers, and it has raised more than $5 million for local charities.

This year's tour is Oct. 9-11, eight homes, all reachable by car. They are usually reachable by boat too; look for the orange flag on the dock. With the lake this low, check the tour website before you plan on tying up.

Feeding the carp at Bridgewater Marina & Boat Rentals is a tradition almost as old as the lake itself. The marina keeps plain popcorn on hand just for this. The carp can live 10 to 20 years, so some of the ones showing up today have likely been doing this a while.
