Monticello Kiwanis Hosts Community Leaders

Over the past few months, the Kiwanis Club of Monticello has hosted a very interesting lineup of Community leaders and officials, including –

Hon. Jacqueline Ricciani was sworn in as Sullivan County Family Court Judge on December 29, 2025. Judge Ricciani described how she has been working to assist vulnerable children in our community through the legal system.

Hon. Kathleen Lara was elected County Treasurer in November 2025 after serving as Deputy Treasurer for eleven years. She discussed the numerous responsibilities as County Treasurer, including disbursing funds, collecting property taxes, revenue collection, financial reports, etc.

Matthew Sush was appointed as the President and CEO of the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce on February 2, 2026. From Day One he has been busy directing the organization’s efforts to promote, support and advocate for the local businesses in the community. His past experience as a business relations officer at Jeff Bank is definitely beneficial with his new duties.

Hon. Scott Mace was elected Town of Thompson Supervisor in November 2025. He delivered an informative power point presentation focusing on long-term comprehensive plan covering zoning developments, housing, recreation, parks, youth programs, etc.

It was easy to determine that the above presentations were a hub for learning about the inner workings of our community since club members and guests were intrigued with the subject matters and lingered buzzing with many questions.

Monticello Kiwanis Busy February Meeting

The Monticello Kiwanis Club members had a busy and enjoyable February meeting. President Marvin Rappaport welcomed Vanessa McPhillips, Vice President of Operations & Strategy for the Sullivan Couty Partnership for Economic Development, who gave an informative presentation on the many new business endeavors that are anticipated in the County.

Next on the agenda was the installation of our newest club member. Stephanie Mobley, Social Services Foster Care Supervisor, was previously a guest speaker reporting on the foster care program and the role of the caseworkers ensuring the smooth transition of children being placed into foster care. This collaborates with the Monticello Kiwanis’ Sweet Dreams Project, which was created to ease the tension of children going into foster care by providing them with duffel bags filled with comfort items to bring with them, such as a blanket, pillow, toiletries, stuffed animals, games, books, etc., depending on the age and needs of each child. Mrs. Mobley was very impressed with this project and was very happy to join the Kiwanis Family and assist in its mission, which is improving the world, one child and one community at a time. She was installed by Hudson River West Lieut. Gov. Christine Mahoney.

EverGreen Meadow Exec. Director Visits Monticello Kiwnnis

Adrienne Jensen, Executive Director of EverGreen Meadow Services & Academy, was guest speaker at a recent Monticello Kiwanis Club Meeting. She shared an interesting and informative presentation describing EverGreen’s support programs and services for adolescent girls who are struggling with emotional and behavioral impacts of trauma, anxiety, depression and other mental health challenges in our community as well as across the entire New York State. They are in the process of opening a residential treatment and middle school campus in Rock Hill to serve these young girls. They are also partnering with local schools and community-based organizations to help deliver empowerment and preventive programs.

The mission of EverGreen Meadow is to serve lives and open pathways to brighten futures, one girl at a time. Their mission is similar to that of Kiwanis, which is to improve the world one child and one community at a time.

MONTICELLO KIWANIS SPREADS HOLIDAY CHEER

The Kiwanis Club of Monticello is continuing their tradition of spreading the holiday spirit by assisting local community programs in enhancing the well-being of those in need.

In support of the club mission of improving the world, one child and one community at a time, the club donated $200 to PRASAD Children’s Dental Health Program, which has been improving the oral health of children by having its mobile clinic partnering with Sullivan County School Districts to provide needed dental services to many youths in our community.

The club contributed $200 to United Way for Thanksgiving goodies and followed through in December with games and toys to help United Way make the holiday season more enjoyable for children and families in the community through their Project Care Program. In addition, $200 was presented to Federation for the Homeless to the delight and appreciation of Program Administrator Kathy Kreiter.

The club also donated $200 to a Single Bite whose mission is to fight food insecurity by providing nutritious prepared meals to children and families in the County. They also are supporting Alzheimer families and programs by contributing $100 to the Orange/Sullivan Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Monticello Kiwanis President Marvin Rappaport stated that the club can continually support the needs of the community thanks to the members and the local residents supporting its major fundraisers – both which are in honor and in memory of exceptional Kiwanis members - the Bob Huebner Memorial Rose Sale and Bernie Shore/Rose Raimond Fundraising Dinner at Yanni’s Restaurant.

Monticello Kiwanis Hosts Divisional Meeting

The Kiwanis Club of Monticello recently hosted the Hudson River West (HRW) Division Council Meeting at Albella Restaurant in Monticello, NY. In attendance were Kiwanis HRW Lieut. Governor Christine Mahoney and Kiwanis Club members from Callicoon, Chester, Middletown, Minisink, Monticello and Woodridge.

Representatives from each club shared their recent projects at the meeting and discussed opportunities to work together to achieve greater results to help children in need jointly with NY District Governor Carla Ingram’s Theme – “Challengers – Defying the Odds, Building a Future for Foster Children”. In conjunction with this mission, the guest speakers were Stephanie Mobley and Marlene Osterhout from the Sullivan County Department of Social Services Foster Care Unit. They reported on the children coming into the Foster Care Services and thanked the Monticello Kiwanians for their continual support and contributions through the Club’s Sweet Dreams Project. This project provides children who are removed from their homes and transitioned into new surroundings with duffle bags filled with comforting items such as a blanket, pillow, toothbrush, socks, hats, pj’s, personal toiletries, stuffed animals, books, depending on the needs and age of each child. Families with children going into homeless shelters receive items, if needed, as well, including cleaning products, towels, toilet paper, detergent, etc. Many of the Kiwanis Clubs in attendance are also doing their share to help improve emotional well-being of children in their communities by also offering comforting and personal items.

These projects are focused on the Kiwanis Mission, which is dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time.

Monticello and Woodridge Kiwanis Clubs Honor Veterans

The Kiwanis Clubs of Monticello and Woodridge joined together to bring some happiness to veterans serviced by the Sullivan County Veterans Service Agency and Action Toward Independence (ATI). They presented little gifts and Happy Veterans Day cards to Veterans Director Stephen Walsh and ATI Executive Director Deborah Worden. The cards were provided by the Kiwanis members as well as by members of the Kiwanis service leadership clubs, including the Fallsburg High School Key Club and the Aktion Club of Sullivan County. The Aktion Club is sponsored by both Kiwanis Clubs and comprised of individuals with various degrees of disabilities affiliated with Arc The Greater Hudson Valley, The Center for Discovery and New Hope Community.

The cards and gifts, consisting of personal toiletry items, socks, gloves, hats, Find the Word, Sudoku and Crossword Puzzles, solar dancing figures, playing cards and an assortment of candy, will be distributed to local veterans, including homeless individuals and patients at the local nursing homes and hospitals as well as Castle Point and Albany Veterans Hospital.

Directors Walsh and Worden stated that both agencies work together to serve the local veterans and they thanked the Kiwanis Clubs stating that the individuals will love not only the gifts and cards, but especially the idea that someone took the time to remember and thank them for their service and sacrifice to our country. Many of these veterans face multiple challenges and the time spent to convey a thoughtful message goes a long way in helping them through a difficult time.

The Kiwanis Clubs have reached out to many agencies in the past year with the main mission of giving back to the community and to let them know that there are people who care for them.

HPAC VISITS MONTICELLO KIWANIS

The Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre (HPAC) Community Outreach Coordinator Toni Castillo and Director of Development Lourdesa Hunt recently gave a very interesting and informative presentation to the Kiwanis Club of Monticello. They highlighted their children’s and adult activities, family events, sponsorship of various school district events and plans to restore the Luzon Train Station as well as other activities they are involved in.

AKTION CLUB BUSY WITH SUMMER ACTIVITIES
The Aktion Club of Sullivan County was on the move during June, July and August hosting several enjoyable events. They held a basketball hoop-a-thon on June 21st at New Hope Community in Loch Sheldrake, NY and raised $420, which was donated to the United Way of Sullivan County along with a large amount of non-perishable food items.

On July 15th, an awesome talent show took place at New Hope Theater where very talented Aktion Club members entertained guests – and each other – with great songs , dances and playing musical instruments. An enjoyable time was had by all. The following week several members participated in the Bethel Woods Hello Inclusion Festival and took turns manning the Aktion Club Informational Table. This is an annual free, one-day music festival event in celebration of Disability Pride Month.

The good times continued on July 26th with the Aktion Club celebrating their10th Year Anniversary with a Spring Fling Dinner Dance held at the White Sulphur Springs Firehouse. A lot of dancing, eating and good times were had by all.

On August 16th, they held their Annual Car Wash at the SullivanARC location on lower Broadway in Monticello, New York. The members warmly greeted each customer and did an outstanding job washing the cars, tires and windows with sponges and brushes followed by hosing and wiping the carsdown to a deep shine. There was no charge for the car wash; however donations and tips were gladly accepted and $400.00 was raised. This will help the club fund various community service events.

The Aktion Club of Sullivan County is comprised of adults affiliated with the ARC-Greater Hudson Valley, New Hope Community and The Center for Discovery and is comprised of individuals with various degrees of disabilities. It is sponsored by the Kiwanis Clubs of Monticello and Woodridge.

Commissioner John Liddle Presentation at Monticello Kiwanis

Sullivan County Health and Human Services Commissioner John Liddle recently attended a Monticello Kiwanis Club Meeting. He spoke about several of the programs that provide services to children in our county. He also spoke about housing issues in the county and its impact on the children who are homeless and residing in hotels until more permanent housing alternatives become available. Commissioner Liddle’s presentation underscores the reason why Monticello Kiwanis has reached out to the Health and Family Services Foster Care and Protective Services Units to assist the children through our “Sweet Dreams Project.” This program provides children who are removed from their homes and transitioned into new surroundings with back packs filled with comfort personal items such as blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, toiletries, games, books, toothbrush, socks, etc. This really helps them get through some difficult times.

Just a reminder!

Aktion Club Car Wash is Aug. 16th

The Aktion Club of Sullivan County will be hosting a Car Wash Fundraiser Saturday, Aug. 16th from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. at the Greater Hudson Valley Arc Building, 162 East Broadway, Monticello (next to Tire Discount Center). The rain date will be Sunday, Aug. 17th.

There is no charge for the car wash; however donations and tips will be gladly accepted. Monies raised will help the club fund various community service events.

The Aktion Club of Sullivan County is sponsored by the Kiwanis Clubs of Monticello and Woodridge. The club is comprised of adults with various degrees of disabilities who are affiliated with Arc Greater Hudson Valley, New Hope Community and Center for Discovery. Members are given the opportunity to contribute to the community, develop social interaction awareness, improve their self-esteem and develop leadership skills.
