I was told a couple of weeks ago that Bro. Wayne had not been doing well. I knew that I needed to go see him, but I've just been very busy. This past Saturday, I was able to stop in and see him and Miss Chris.
I am so glad that I did.
When I was brought on board to partner with Camp McDaniel back in 2016, I didn't know the impact that this man would make on my life.
I was told that they wanted me to run our ministry out of Camp McDaniel and that they weren't going to charge me anything to do so. Well, that was a no brainer for me, but my parents didn't raise me to be a free loader either, so I started trading sweat equity in exchange for this partnership.
Little did I know that this old fella would teach me a thing or two about being faithful and hard work.
For the first few years before his health wouldn't allow him to work anymore, Bro. Wayne was at the camp almost daily doing the things that needed to be done to maintain the property. He would fix things, mow grass, and spend hours spraying w**d killer so that I wouldn't have to w**deat so much.
I can't tell you how many times that I was on my way to do a certain job and when I got there, he either had already done it or was doing it.
To many, they saw a grumpy old man. That's what I thought too when we first met. But, truth be told, he was really just a big old teddy bear.
When I left him last Saturday, I told him that I loved him. He didn't respond. That wasn't his nature to say that, especially to another man. But, when he shook my hand, he had glassy eyes.
I'm glad that I told him that. It was the last time that I got to talk to him.
I'm going to miss my friend, Donald Wayne Scruggs. His work for the Lord at Camp McDaniel has impacted thousands who have participated in the programs that we have hosted over the past decade. His labor was not in vain.
