The 44th Annual Historic Morganton Festival returns September 11β12, 2026, transforming approximately nine blocks of historic Downtown Morganton into a huge pedestrian-friendly street celebration.

ποΈ Admission: FREE
ποΈ A FESTIVAL BUILT AROUND HISTORIC DOWNTOWN
Instead of taking place at a fairground, the festival unfolds through Morganton's downtown streets around the Historic Burke County Courthouse Square.
Historic buildings, big shade trees and local businesses become the backdrop for two days of music, food, shopping and family activities.
The celebration has been bringing people together for more than four decades and now attracts tens of thousands of visitors.
πΈ AND THE CONCERTS ARE FREE
One of the biggest draws is the live music.
πΆ Festival concerts are included with free admission.
The Courthouse Square becomes a gathering place for performances, allowing visitors to bring a lawn chair and settle in for an evening of music right in the heart of downtown.
That's a pretty good deal for a fall weekend.
π¨ THEN THERE ARE 250+ ARTISANS
If you love festivals for the shopping, give yourself plenty of time.
More than 250 arts and crafts vendors have filled the downtown streets with everything from:
πΊ Pottery
πͺ΅ Handcrafted woodwork
π§Ά Textiles
π Jewelry
π¨ Original artwork
π Handmade gifts
This isn't just a quick row of booths. The artisan area stretches through a significant portion of downtown.
π§ THERE'S EVEN AN ENGINEERING COMPETITION
One of the more unusual parts of the festival is M.A.D.E., Morganton Arts Design & Engineering.
Student teams put their creativity and engineering skills to work during a live competition, adding something completely different to the traditional music-and-crafts festival experience.
π COME READY TO EAT
Festival food is a major part of the weekend, too.
Past offerings have included:
π Charcoal-grilled chicken on a stick
π₯ Greek gyros
π· Southern BBQ
π₯ Fried cinnamon rolls
πΏ Classic festival snacks and sweets
Adults can also look for opportunities to sample local craft beer and wine while exploring downtown.
π‘ BRING THE KIDS AND TEENS
Dedicated activity areas have offered additional entertainment for younger visitors, including Kids Zone and Teen Zone attractions, inflatables, challenges and carnival-style activities.
That makes this one of those festivals where different generations can find something to do instead of simply following each other from vendor booth to vendor booth.

π‘ Small Town Discoveries Tip: Saturday morning is a good time to explore the artisan vendors before the biggest crowds arrive. If you're staying for an evening concert, bring a lawn chair and plan to claim your spot around Courthouse Square well before the performance begins.
π Important: Leave pets at home. The festival does not allow animals within the event area, so travelers bringing dogs should plan accordingly.
And don't just attend the festival and immediately drive home. Morganton sits in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, making this an easy event to build into a Western North Carolina weekend filled with mountain scenery, local restaurants and nearby outdoor adventures.
