๐ŸฆŸ๐ŸšซA reminder that the City of Myrtle Beach's weekly mosquito spraying program begins each May and continues throughout the season, typically ending in October.

One important note: Our spray technician does not spray during rain because the treatment is not effective when it's wet. If weather causes a delay, crews will resume spraying as soon as Mother Nature allows.

City crews spray residential rights-of-way on a weekly rotation to help control the mosquito population. Spraying takes place during the work week and is always weather permitting.

๐ŸBeekeepers are encouraged to register their beehives by calling (843) 918-2000. Crews avoid spraying areas where registered beehives are located.

Spraying begins in the late evening, each weekday, on the following schedule in Myrtle Beach:

โ€ข Mondays: 62nd Avenue North to northern city limits (except Del Webb community).
โ€ข Tuesdays: 21st Avenue North to 62nd Avenue North (includes Del Webb community).
โ€ข Wednesdays: Third Avenue South/Highway 501 to 21st Avenue North.
โ€ข Thursdays: 17th Avenue South to Third Avenue South (includes Highway 15 corridor).
โ€ข Fridays: 17th Avenue South to southern city limits.

โ—Residents should do their part, too, to help eliminate standing water (mosquitoes love standing water):

โœ“ Tip or dispose of water-collecting containers (cans, buckets, pots, toys)
โœ“ Properly dispose of old tires
โœ“ Clean clogged roof gutters and yard drains
โœ“ Drain pools, boats, and covers
โœ“ Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers
โœ“ Change water weekly in birdbaths and animal water bowls/troughs
โœ“ Eliminate standing puddles around your yard

MYRTLE BEACH ENCOURAGES WATER CONSERVATION DURING SEVERE DROUGHT
The City of Myrtle Beach is asking residents and businesses to help conserve water after state officials declared a severe drought for the P*e Dee River Basin, which includes Horry County. Conserving water now will help protect the region's water supply and ensure adequate water is available for essential needs and fire protection.
The City of Myrtle Beach receives its drinking water from the Grand Strand Water and Sewer Authority (GSWSA) and follows the authority's drought management guidance.
The South Carolina State Climatology Office and the South Carolina Drought Response Committee have declared severe drought conditions for the region. In response, GSWSA will temporarily activate its Drought Management Plan beginning Wednesday, July 1, to help ensure a reliable water supply and maintain adequate fire protection throughout its service area.
Clarification: While GSWSA's Drought Management Plan includes changes to excess water usage charges for many of its customers, those changes do not apply to City of Myrtle Beach water customers at this time. The City of Myrtle Beach is a wholesale customer of GSWSA, and city water rates are established annually through the city's budget process. As a result, Myrtle Beach customers will not see any changes to their water rates or excess usage charges because of GSWSA's temporary drought measures at this time.
However, the City of Myrtle Beach asks all water customers to do their part by reducing or eliminating non-essential water use. GSWSA advises residents who irrigate their lawns to do so only before 6:00 a.m. or after 9:00 a.m.

Simple conservation measures can make a meaningful difference, including:
Water lawns only before 6:00 a.m. or after 9:00 a.m., and only when necessary.
Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth or shaving.
Run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads.
Repair leaking faucets, toilets and irrigation systems.
Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks.
Wash vehicles only when necessary and use a hose equipped with a shutoff nozzle.

The hurricane season is upon us, and like every year we hope for calm winds and sunny skies!

There has been questions about what would happen in the worst case scenario. I contacted the city:

โ€œThe Cityโ€™s zoning code classifies the mobile home park as "existing non-conforming." Under our current regulations, Section 705.A.3 allows for the restoration of damaged non-conforming structures following a storm or calamity, provided a building permit is obtained within 12 months of the damage.

The exact ordinance language:
705.A.3: Restoration of damaged structures. Any nonconforming building damaged by fire, flood, explosion, wind, earthquake, war, riot, or other calamity, or act of God, can be built as it existed immediately before destruction and the nonconforming use (if existing before destruction) can be reestablished provided the building permit is obtained within 12 months after destruction and maintained without lapsing. However, replacement of destroyed buildings in a floodplain must be elevated in accordance with the provisions of Article 11- Floodplain Management Regulations.

Please keep in mind that while zoning laws allow the placement layout to be restored as it existed, federal floodplain regulations or updated structural building codes may require the replacement homes to be elevated or built to newer wind-resistance safety standards. Those building and safety requirements are handled separately from zoning.โ€

The strong earthquakes yesterday around the world serve as an important reminder to know what to do should an earthquake occur in South Carolina.

Horry County can have earthquakes and several fault lines exist across South Carolina. Horry County can also see threats from tsunamis.
