Today, Marina Inn at Grande Dunes honors Indigenous Peoples’ Day and the Indigenous communities whose history is deeply woven into the Grand Strand. 🌿

Long before Myrtle Beach became the destination we know today, this coastal region was home to Indigenous peoples, including the Waccamaw and Winyah. Their history is an essential part of the story of our shores, rivers, and surrounding lands.

Here in Horry County, many members of the Waccamaw Indian People trace their ancestry to the Dimery Settlement, a community that began with John and Elizabeth Dimery’s purchase of land near Dog Bluff in 1813. Over generations, its families built a community with churches and a school, preserving family ties and their Indigenous identity through discrimination and hardship.

The Waccamaw Indian People received South Carolina state recognition in 2005. Today, their members remain an active part of our community, carrying their culture, stories, and traditions forward for future generations.

We invite our guests and neighbors to take a moment to learn about this living history and honor the resilience and continuing contributions of Indigenous peoples today and every day.

Explore the local history through Waccamaw Indian People: Past, Present, Future, created through a partnership with Coastal Carolina University, the Waccamaw Indian People, and the Horry County Museum.
