At least two hikers have died from rattlesnake bites in California this year.

That statistic gets attention, but understanding the animal behind the headline is just as important.

Rattlesnakes play an important role in California ecosystems and, in most cases, would rather avoid conflict entirely. Their rattle is a warning system designed to prevent encounters from escalating.

The more we understand wildlife, the better equipped we are to safely enjoy the outdoors.

Special thanks to local wildlife rehabilitators and snake rescue volunteers who help both people and wildlife coexist.

The Napa River is constantly changing. Water levels shift with the seasons, wildlife comes and goes, and familiar places look different from one month to the next.

The more time you spend on the river, the more you realize that change is part of what makes it interesting.

A river becomes the sea.

Growth has a way of building quietly.

know exactly what I’m doing.

Occasionally.

Somewhere between kayaking, questionable decisions, and entirely too much commitment to costume changes.

This is not your typical kayak trip.

It’s a journey through a different side of Napa — one shaped by history, wildlife, and stories that stretch further back than most people realize.
