At least two hikers have died from rattlesnake bites in California this year.
That statistic gets attention, but understanding the animal behind the headline is just as important.
Rattlesnakes play an important role in California ecosystems and, in most cases, would rather avoid conflict entirely. Their rattle is a warning system designed to prevent encounters from escalating.
The more we understand wildlife, the better equipped we are to safely enjoy the outdoors.
Special thanks to local wildlife rehabilitators and snake rescue volunteers who help both people and wildlife coexist.
