The Hyde House

The Hyde House Close to Athens, Logan and Hocking Hills. Originally built by Dr. I. P. Primrose for his daughter Sarah and her new husband, it was sold to Dr. Hyde in 1890.

This beautiful National Register Victorian Bed and Breakfast in Nelsonville Ohio was built in 1882. 5 beautiful suites featuring en-suite bathrooms, Tv’s and WIFI. This beautiful National Register Victorian house (formerly known as The Mead House) was built in 1882 and became the home of Dr. Jerry Morris Hyde and the Hyde Family descendants for almost 90 years. ors and also partners in several Nelsonville real estate ventures. When the last Hyde descendent passed away in 1977, the house became a succession of homes, rentals and student housing, until it was rescued and beautifully restored as a Bed & Breakfast by Michael and Sheila Mark in 2006. In 2009 long-time Bed and Breakfast entrepreneur and history lover Sue Maxwell became owner. Sue carried own the B&B tradition until 2016. Sue owns the Primrose Bed & Breakfast across the street. Carrying on Sue's tradition we hope you enjoy being able to “Sleep with History” at the Hyde House in Nelsonville! The Hyde House estate has a large wrap around front porch with plenty of sitting, lots of space for relaxing. The estate has a lovely dining area, sitting room, parlor room and four well appointed bedrooms & 4 1/2 bathrooms. Each guest will have a comfortable colorful room with private bath. Two bedrooms have a tiger claw soaking tubs. Only 1 block from Nelsonville Square and closely situated to Wayne National Forest and 18 minutes from Lake Hope State Park in Zaleski State Forest with miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. The 120-acre Lake Hope is perfect for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, picnicking and swimming. Our guests will definitely want to visit Nelsonville's Historic Arts District with Stuart's Opera House, Hocking College and the Nelsonville Music Festival. At Hyde House Bed & Breakfast cyclists are a few miles away from one of Ohio's most challenging climbs, Lick Run Hill, with it's double 's' turn at a 19% grade. ATV enthusiasts are just minutes from the Dorr Run Trail Head with over 75 miles of designated trails for off-road vehicle riders, mountain bikers and hikers through the Wayne National Forest. The Hyde House is 15 minutes west of Athens and Ohio University and 15 minutes east of Old Man's Cave. We are looking for well motivated individual who would like to cook at our Historic Bed and Breakfast. This job would be a part time job. This individual would be cooking for tourists coming to the area, so we would like them to have a general knowledge of the area and be personable. Must be able to make breakfast or be able to be trained to make breakfast. Must have transportation and a working cellphone. Cook time is between 7-9:30 am and must be able to clean up after themselves.

November is finally here. We may be taking the day off today, but we will be back in action next weekend, Nov. 7 and 8. Next weekend’s trains will be pulled by No. 3, Ohio’s only regularly operating standard gauge steam locomotive.

Two trains depart Nelsonville both days at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The ride will last about two hours and 15 minutes and will include a
30-minute stop at Robbins Crossing.

Reservations are highly encouraged. Tickets are $25 for adults, $22 for seniors/military, and $16 for children (3-12). Children under 3 ride for free, but must sit on a lap. To purchase tickets, visit hvsry.org or call

Join us this October for historic trains beginning Thursday, Oct. 15, and every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the rest of the month. The trains on the 17th and 18th will be steam-powered. Our vintage diesel locomotives will pull the rest of the weekend trains and all of the weekday trains.

One train will depart Nelsonville on Thursdays and Fridays at 1:00 and two will depart on Saturdays and Sundays at noon and 2:30. The 1:00 weekday trains and the noon weekend trains will last about one hour and 45 minutes. The 2:30 weekend trains will last about two hours and 15 minutes. Reservations are encouraged.

Step back in time as you take a historic train ride along a route dating back to the late 1860s. You will see old brick kilns, a canal lock, the Hocking River, and more. Our Saturday and Sunday trains will also include a 30-minute stop at Robbins Crossing, a re-created pioneer village on the campus of Hocking College with original log cabins. The weekday trains will not include a stop at Robbins Crossing.

For the weekday and 2:30 trains, tickets are $13 for children, $16 for seniors/military, and $18 for adults. For the noon trains, tickets are $11 for children, $14 for seniors/military, and $16 for adults. Children under three ride for free, but they must sit on a lap. We’ve got more historic trains departing Nelsonville this weekend, Sept. 26-27. The trains this weekend will be diesel-powered.

Two regular trains will depart on the 26th at noon and 2:30 and the 27th at 1:00. Ohio’s Friendliest Train Robbery will depart the evening of the 26th at 6:00. Reservations are highly encouraged for the robbery train as seating is limited and they sell fast. The noon train lasts about one hour and 45 minutes, the 1:00 and 2:30 trains last about two hours and 15 minutes, and the robbery train lasts about two hours.

Join us for a historic train ride along a route dating back to the late 1860s. You will see the remains of the Nelsonville Brick Company, a lock from the old Hocking Canal, and more. The noon, 1:00, and 2:30 trains will include a 30-minute stop at Robbins Crossing, a
re-created pioneer village on the campus of Hocking College with original log cabins.
