Did you know there’s an 18 century footprint hiding in plain sight in downtown New Bern?
The outdoor chapel at Christ Church sits on the site of New Bern‘s original colonial Church, the town‘s first house of formal worship. When its foundation was excavated in 1967, the historic outline was restored, creating the peaceful space visitors see today.

We just love all the history in our little town. Check out this interesting historical story

In October 1884, Union veteran William Garrison Reed returned to New Bern — twenty-two years after first arriving as a soldier with the 44th Massachusetts Volunteer Militia. In the October issue of New Bern Magazine, New Bern Historical Society Executive Director Anthony Giardino traces Reed's remarkable journey back through eastern NC, camera in hand.

Reed photographed Fort Totten, former campgrounds, and the streets he remembered from the war — leaving behind an extraordinary visual record of New Bern two decades after the Civil War. "I could not picture New Berne without plenty of soldiers moving about," Reed reflected. Read the full story in the October issue.

Gearing up for Mum Fest! Check out all the great headliners !

MumFest is back! New Bern's award-winning annual festival returns to Historic Downtown October 10–11, 2026, with two days of live music, amazing food, arts & crafts, and family fun.

Saturday headliners on the NC Education Lottery Music Stage: Sam Morrow (3:30 PM) and The Wilder Blue (5:30 PM) — plus Biscuits & Gravy and Packhouse. Sunday features The Git Down, The Bonafides, Hoff 'n' Finch, and Big Jim Kohler. Add the Protown BMX Stunt Show, Purina Incredible Dog Team, Craven Chaos Roller Derby, KidsZone, 250+ vendors, and the best food trucks New Bern has to offer.

Free admission. Downtown New Bern, October 10–11.
