Howard’s Homecoming hit differently for me this year. It’s always a good time reuniting with college friends and reminiscing about who I was and how it was being on the yard back in the early ‘80s.

But this year, as the Cathy Hughes School of Communications celebrated its 55th anniversary, it honored 55 distinguished alumni, and I was thrilled to be in that number!

Thank you, HU, for helping this first-generation college grad reach her goal of becoming editor-in-chief of Essence magazine. Thank you for teaching me resilience and the audacity to dream big. Who would have thought that during my career I’d have a TV series on OWN, a home goods collection at Macy’s, two published books, and an award-winning collection of bed and breakfast inns? Me—and it’s all Howard’s fault!!

Who becomes a fashion legend most? Audrey Smaltz, the former model, Ebony Fashion Fair show commentator, and founder of The Ground Crew, a company that ran the backstage of fashion shows for nearly every major designer in the 80s.

Audrey is the one who inspired my early fashion career. My grandmother, mother and I dressed up and showed up every year when the Ebony Fashion Fair made its way throughout the South showcasing European designer clothes on beautiful, melanated models. It was the sultry commentary of Ms. Audrey Smaltz that sent models sashaying down the runway and me walking through the world with an unshakable confidence. She used to say things like: “I’m ch*****ne, don’t treat me like beer!” And I modeled my fashion commentary after her as I helped pay my way through college at Howard University commentating the big fashion shows in the DMV.

So many of my fashion friends from my days at WWD and Essence magazine showed up at FIT to give Audrey her flowers during her book signing of “Every Inch a Lady,” edited by my bestie Patrik Henry Bass over at Amistad.
