With the emergency evacuation zone narrowed significantly, Port facilities are once again open and normal business schedules will resume tomorrow.

We know this has been a difficult day for our community. We are thankful for emergency responders, community leaders, and caring neighbors. Even when times are tough, there is much we can be proud of. Our thoughts continue to be with Pacific Seafood and its employees.

10/25/2026

Due to the emergency at Pacific Seafood and the resulting 1-mile evacuation radius, all Port of Newport facilities on both sides of the bay are closed until further notice.

Our thoughts are with all impacted by the current situation. We hope all are safe. We will post again when our facilities reopen.

SEEKING FISHERMEN INPUT:

NOAA’s Northwest and Southwest Fisheries Science Centers are preparing their annual Ecosystem Status Report for the Pacific Fishery Management Council, regional partners, and coastal communities. These reports are designed to give managers a more complete picture of conditions in the California Current marine ecosystem.

The Science Centers are looking for fishing industry input, with a focus on unusual or unexpected conditions observed during the 2026 fishing season. They’ve set up an email address ([email protected]) where fishermen can share their observations directly with the team that prepares the Ecosystem Status Report.

Examples of helpful observations include:
•Did you see species in different places, different depths, or at different times of the year than you normally see them?
•Were water temperatures warmer/colder than normal, or were there any other unusual environmental conditions that you observed?
•Are you catching anything new or unusual?
•What are you seeing in the diet/stomachs of fish you catch?
•Are operating costs and the overall level of effort and participation for your focal fisheries different this year as compared to previous years? Have any new challenges or obstacles emerged?

The anticipated impacts of El Niño conditions are especially important to fishermen, who know all too well about how warm water affects fish movement. Read about the indicators NOAA is tracking and how the Newport Hydrological Line plays a part in tracking ocean changes.

Ocean monitoring and species changes will signal El Niño’s arrival.
