For those who like to wander the highways and byways around Wabash County you may have noticed we have several historical markers throughout the county. At least 8 are located throughout the county erected by the State Historical Bureau and Society and other organizations. There are 4 in Wabash, 2 in North Manchester, 1 in Richvalley and one other in LaGro. One commemorates Wabash being the first electrically light municipality in the world, another the birthplace of vice president Thomas Marshall, the Lagro Catholic Church and Civil War Camp. Wabash among others. I am sure that Wabash County is deserving of more but they do take some work and money to have one. If you know of a person or site that should be recognized with a marker contact the Indiana Historical Bureau in Indianapolis. This is the state historical marker honoring FRANCES SLOCUM. This is an old picture. Recently the marker was refurbished. Frances Slocum, born in 1773, as a young girl was kidnapped (1778) by Delaware Indians in the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania. She live in with her Indian family in Pa Oh, Canada and Indiana until her death at Deaf Man's Village in 1847. This marker is located in Waltz township west of the intersection of county roads 9005 and 550W. Her life story has been told in historical pageants, film and in books. She has been honored by having schools, a bank, societies and hiking trail named for her. They still teach about her in school and some classes even visit her grave. Micheal Thompson, a fifth great grandson, wrote a biography on her life. Her story was included in the book “Wabash County Chronicles” printed in 2010 by History Press. The latest schoolbook on Indiana History "Hoosiers and the American Story” by James H. Madison and Lee Ann Sandweiss include her in their book as well. James Alexander Thom has done an excellent job in telling her story in a historical novel entitled THE RED HEART. So her story is very much alive today.

Trolley Tour in North Manchester - oh the fun and amazing buildings in town

Historic Preservation Month continues, and we’re excited to spotlight another group of incredible North Manchester properties that have been recognized through Manchester Alive’s Historic Preservation Awards program. These homes and buildings remind us that preservation is not just about maintaining structures — it’s about honoring the craftsmanship, stories, and character that make our community unique.

🏡 602 N Mill Street – House of Seven Gables
Recipient of the 2021 Residential Preservation Award, this beautifully restored Eastlake-style Victorian home features the angular and three-dimensional details popular during the late Victorian Era. Its decorative iron fence only adds to the home’s striking presence and historic charm.

⛪ 308 N Walnut Street – Walnut Street Church
Honored in 2023 following restoration of the roof and bell tower, this historic church was originally built in 1885. The original 135-year-old slate roof was replaced with a sustainable slate-like “green roofing” material while preserving the historic appearance of the building.

🏠 908 N Wayne Street
Built in 1954 by Danish couple Niels and Ingleborg Bendsen, this one-story frame home received a preservation honor in 2019 after Dan and Jeanne Andersen completed extensive interior and exterior restoration work while maintaining the home’s original footprint and Danish-inspired style.

🏡 407 N Walnut Street
Emily and Stephen Donaldson were recognized in 2024 for their preservation of this charming 1883 Italianate home. The mansard roof, original windows, and preserved footprint continue to make this property a standout piece of North Manchester history.

Want to see these properties — and many more — in person? Join us Thursday, May 28 aboard Trolley No.85 during our first Thursdays @ The Landing event of 2026!

🚌 Historic trolley tours will depart from Ogan’s Landing at 6 PM and 7 PM and will feature local historic homes, buildings, and preservation stories from around the community.

🎶 While you’re there, enjoy live music, food, and a beautiful evening along the river.
