The Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication was established in 2012 by Dean Emeritus and Professor Dr. Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver as a pioneering site for the advancement of women in the field of communication -- a unique programming distinction at FIU. The Center's mission is to foster and advance the academic and professional growth of women by supporting the

next generation of professionals and giving them the impetus to take on challenges and to pursue leadership positions in the communication industry. The Center will engage females in a series of workshops, lectures, advisory boards, panel discussions and other activities, to further prepare them for successful communication careers - encouraging them to be future influencers and distinguished leaders of the profession.

Pallavi Guha, Ph.D. Named Director of Research, Publications, and Professional Advancement at the National Communication Association

LEAD Research Consortium and 2018 Woman Faculty Moving Forward (WFMF) Kopenhaver Fellow Dr. Guha, joined the National Communication Association (NCA) as Director of Research, Publications, and Professional Advancement in April 2026.

The Woman Faculty Moving Forward (WFMF) Kopenhaver Fellows Program, through the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication at Florida International University, is a and initiative that advances women scholars through professional development, networking, research collaboration, and career growth.

As FIU continues to lead research in water, climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and other global challenges, communication scholars like Dr. Guha play a vital role in translating research into public understanding and policy.

An award-winning media researcher and former international journalist with more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Guha joins the NCA leadership team after serving as a Fall 2025 visiting scholar at the Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication (CARGC) at the University of Pennsylvania and as a tenured Associate Professor of Journalism in Maryland.

Before academia, she served as Senior Correspondent and Editor at thetimesofindia net and worked with BBC News and Current Affairs in London, covering elections in India, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

We celebrate Dr. Guha's outstanding achievement and continued leadership in advancing communication research and scholarship, demonstrating how effective communication strengthens research, innovation, and global impact.

Congratulations to Dr. Marta Mensa of the University of North Texas on being selected as part of the inaugural class of the AEJMC/Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Fellowship for the Empowerment of Early-Career Women in Communication Education!

Chosen among five exceptional women nationwide, Mensa joins this prestigious year-long fellowship focused on mentorship, leadership, teaching pedagogy, research and scholarly productivity, and PF&R service. An assistant professor of advertising at UNT’s Mayborn School of Journalism, her research explores Hispanic/Latinx representation, gender stereotypes, inclusive advertising, and cultural identity across global and Latin American contexts. Originally from Catalonia, Spain, she also brings international industry experience and a passion for creating more equitable spaces in advertising and communication education.

As part of this groundbreaking inaugural class, she will participate in programming during the 2026 AEJMC Conference in New Orleans and the 2027 AEJMC Conference in Chicago while continuing to inspire future leaders in media, advertising, and communication scholarship.

Chosen among five exceptional women nationwide, Dr. Cousins joins this prestigious year-long fellowship focused on mentorship, leadership, teaching pedagogy, research and scholarly productivity, and PF&R service. A former journalist with more than 20 years of experience in newspapers and television news, her work and research continue to center on storytelling, education, and minority representation in media.

As a 2026 UNCP Outstanding Teaching Award recipient, Dr. Cousins will also participate in programming at the 2026 AEJMC Conference in New Orleans and the 2027 AEJMC Conference in Chicago as she continues to inspire the next generation of communication professionals and scholars.

We are proud to announce the inaugural class of the AEJMC/Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Fellowship for the Empowerment of Early-Career Women in Communication Education. 💫
Five outstanding AEJMC members have been selected for this year-long fellowship designed to mentor, train, and empower early-career women faculty in teaching pedagogy, research and scholarly productivity, and PF&R service.

The 2026–27 Kopenhaver Empowerment Fellows are:
