Round two: what's the official state gemstone of South Dakota? 💎 Comment your guess before you Google it.

A few tips for photographing fall in the Black Hills: shoot in the first or last hour of light, midday flattens the color. Look for spots where gold aspen sits against dark ponderosa pine; that contrast is what makes Black Hills fall photos distinct. And don't forget to back up and get the wide landscape shot, not just the close-up of a single tree. Spearfish Canyon and the overlooks along Iron Mountain Road are both reliable spots for this.

10/22/2026

Wind Cave National Park doesn't get the crowds Mount Rushmore does, which is part of why it's worth the stop. It's one of the longest and most complex cave systems on the planet, known for its boxwork formations...a honeycomb-like calcite structure found in very few other caves worldwide. Ranger-led tours take you underground; check current tour times before you go, as availability shifts seasonally.

Camp personality check: full-hookup RV site, cozy cabin, glamping tent with a furnished deck, or straight tent camping with dirt under your boots? We see all types at HTR Black Hills, and honestly, all four are right.

Tell us which one's you and whether that's changed over the years.

Iron Mountain Road connects Mount Rushmore to Custer State Park through pigtail bridges, tight curves, and tunnels — several framed so Mount Rushmore appears dead-center through the opening. It's a slow drive by design, and that's the point. Road conditions shift with the weather this time of year, so check current status before you head out.

10/14/2026

🍁Custer State Park's trail system gets overshadowed by the scenic drives, but it shouldn't. Cathedral Spires is a short, steep climb to a genuinely dramatic payoff. Sunday Gulch is a full-day loop through a narrow granite canyon. And Black Elk Peak...the highest point between the Rocky Mountains and the Pyrenees — rewards the climb with a fire lookout tower and a view that covers four states on a clear day.

Now that the season's wrapped, we want to see it through your eyes. Drop your favorite photo from your 2026 stay at HTR Black Hills in the comments, or tag us in your posts... we'll be featuring our favorites over the next few months while we wait for May to roll back around.

🏡Not everyone wants to pitch a tent, and that's fine by us. Our Rustic Cabins at HTR Black Hills sleep 4 with a queen bed and bunk bed, linens and towels provided, plus TV and wall AC.

No in-cabin water.. the bathhouse is a short walk away, but you'll have full access to the community fire pit and everything else camp life offers. Real camping, without the packing list.

See you next season! 🔗https://camphtr.me/htrblackhills

Black Hills debate of the day: if you could only pick one for your next trip, Mount Rushmore or a drive through Custer State Park? Both are five minutes from HTR Black Hills, so we're not exactly neutral here but we want to know where you land. Comment below.
