No more triple-town runs! Just picked up this 2013 Chevy Express 15-passenger van to serve the Bubble. Bring it on Class of ‘26!

This van has good vibes; it was formerly a hiker shuttle van at hostel, which recently closed its doors. So glad we could keep it in the trail community; this thing is built for carting hikers around!

As a q***r Mexican immigrant, Sparkle, the long-distance hiker who is currently attempting to hike a border-to-border single-year triple crown (plus some), says she is hiking to spread a message of joy and positivity. “Under the current administration, every part of my identity is being attacked … it’s about giving people something to hope for,” she said in a recent interview with .co. Along the way, Sparkle is raising money for causes she cares about, including protecting immigrant rights.

Sparkle is currently hiking northbound on the Appalachian Trail section of her journey and recently stopped by the Notch Hostel, headquarters of Summits in Solidarity. She got in late and had to leave early, but still managed to take this photo and catch up with Notch manager Sarah. The two have been in contact for a while--they were paired up through , a program supporting new LGBTQ thru-hikers with experienced mentors.

Like Sparkle, Summits in Solidarity also raises money for organizations that support immigrants, such as the Maine Association for New Americans (MANA) and Khmer Maine, as well as other racial justice and outdoor access programs led for and by communities of color. Found more photos of the Notch hamily Utah trip that are too good not to share 🤠

1. Serena and Pearl, probably discussing which side of the water to stay on so as not to run out of space to walk.
2. Molly bravely descending into Young's Canyon.
3. Pearl was obsessed with the wildflowers. This one is a Winding Mariposa Lily.
4. Serena putting her feet up in Red Breaks Canyon.
5. Even the road walks are awe-inspiring!
6. But they are hot. We found this tree and took advantage of the shade.
7. Coolest gas station I've ever seen.

Looking to immerse yourself in thru-hiking culture in the White Mountains this summer? Apply to join us at The Notch for a week or two through our Cultural Exchange Program!
Participants stay in a bunk or campsite at the hostel while helping out during peak season—making beds, pulling weeds, flipping laundry, or showing hikers around. It’s a hands-on way to be part of the community, with plenty of time to get out and explore the mountains yourself.
Past participants call it a fun, budget-friendly way to stay and play in the Whites.
Dates available: August 17 - September 7. Come for as little as three days, or as long as two weeks.

Enjoy a few more photos from the Notch ladies’ mud season Hayduke hike 🌵

1. A quiet moment at camp in Canyonlands, just before sunset. This was the calm before the storm — once we crawled into our sleeping bags, the wind started whipping so hard I thought all our gear might blow away. (Thankfully, it didn’t)
2. Serena got to put some of her climbing practice to use
3. Morning light in Dark Canyon
4. The person Molly becomes in the desert
5. Yucca flower in bloom
6. Pearl carrying her sleeping pad through a slot canyon because it made her pack too wide to squeeze through

Looking back at these photos just a couple weeks removed, I’m struck by how small we look in such a wide open landscape. It’s a lovely, humbling feeling, and one that already has me wanting to return to the desert. 💛
