This feels like a perfect snapshot of Lincoln's evolution into a four-season destination.

"Two White Mountain Greats Get Together." In 1979, visitors could book a vacation package that combined a stay at the Beacon Motel & Swim Club with skiing at Loon Mountain. For $59, the "Mini-Package" included two nights of lodging, breakfast and dinner, plus a day on the slopes. Those looking for a longer getaway could choose the five-night "Maxi-Package" for $169.

This advertisement highlights some of the Beacon's amenities: an indoor pool and sauna, indoor tennis, live entertainment, a disco, a restaurant, a cocktail lounge, and skiing at a rapidly growing Loon Mountain. Together, they offered visitors a complete White Mountains vacation experience.

Who remembers the Beacon Motel & Swim Club during the Clermont family's era? We'd love to hear your memories.

Two boys strike a pose on Main Street in North Woodstock, New Hampshire, 1953.

On the left is Roger Harrington, and on the right is a boy known only as "Peanut" Perkins. The photograph was taken on Main Street in North Woodstock in 1953, in front of the little building at present-day 114 Main Street.

Roger remembered Peanut, but shared something surprising: despite the surname, he was not related to the Perkins families most of us know today (including Jeff, Ginny, and their relatives). He recalled that Peanut lived at the corner of Bell Street and School Street in North Woodstock.

And that's where our trail goes cold.

Who was Peanut Perkins? What was his full name? What became of him? Does anyone have family connections, photographs, stories, or memories they would be willing to share?

We're also curious about the business visible behind them: Ivy's Dress Shop, which advertised hosiery and yarns. Does anyone remember the shop, who owned it, when it operated, or what the shop was like inside?

As always, some of the best local history comes from our communities' memories. If you know anything about Peanut Perkins or Ivy's Dress Shop, we'd love to hear from you in the comments!

Every photograph has a story. Sometimes we just need a little help finding it.

This photograph comes from one of the many school photo albums in the Upper Pemigewasset Historical Society's collection.

Main Street in Lincoln, New Hampshire, as it appeared in the early 1900s. This view looks east from in front of the Labrecque Homestead, located on the site of today's Kancamagus Country Store. In the distance, the Lincoln Hotel stands on Church Street, offering a glimpse of a village just beginning to take shape.

North Woodstock School students, circa 1887.

This class photograph shows a group of North Woodstock School students gathered in a schoolyard. What makes it wonderful is that it captures both boys and girls of all ages in a fairly informal outdoor setting rather than the more common posed classroom portrait. Fortunately, several of the children have been identified over the years, helping us put names to some of the faces:

• Richard Darling, Charles Clark, and Ellen Howland (three children seated on the boulder at right)
• Harry Clark (seated on the log in front)
• Eugene Clark (with his feet resting on the log)
• Florence Sharon (blonde girl center)
• Jennie Russell (far left, rear)
• Charlotte Clark (seated in front of Jennie Russell)
• Lizzie Sharon (rear row, fourth from right)
• Newton Fox, teacher (rear row, wearing a hat and sporting a beard)

That still leaves many students unidentified.

Do you recognize any of these faces? We'd love to hear from you. Every name added helps preserve the story of North Woodstock and the families who helped shape our community.

Dressed in their finest and gathered beside a horse-drawn carriage, the Lester and Fadden families pause for a photograph in the early 1900s. Shown are Arthur and Mrs. Lester with their children, Ruth and Harry, and James and Ida Fadden with their children, Edna and Norman. A wonderful reminder of a time when family outings began with the hitching of a team rather than the turning of a key.

This photograph is courtesy of the Fadden family.
