The Prairie Inn @ Lathrop House is a two & half-story home located in Norton, Kansas built in1915-16 by Norton native Dr. Wm Lathrop; surgeon and wife, Amy. The frame constructed home was built meticulously by ship laborers paid by the day in the mission style. The entry way and main staircase of the home are inviting as they lead to the main floor parlor, now dining area, and the living room. Eac

h is separated by original hardwood & glass pocket doors. The living room focal point is the fireplace which displays its original firebox and tile. The second floor boasts 3 spacious guest bedroom areas with two enclosed sun porch areas for relaxing. The top floor was the ballroom in the original house and was later remodeled into a loft apartment by Amy Lathrop for her boarding house. A treetop view of Norton from this height is one of a kind. The giant pine and fur trees surrounding the house, planted in the early 1970’s, shade the house and provide for a relaxing escape for visitors on the front terrace of the Inn. This turn of the century home has a history of Norton in the early 1900’s that lives on today. Visitors to the mansion will view the works of several local artists’. Included in this collection on loan are the works of Mary Browne, Sara Davis, Helen Heaton, Helen Hicks, Liz Fowler Howard, Ruby Meyer, Dorothy Moffett, Melissa Gilhousen Nelson, Janette Oswald, Beth Davis Porter Lombardi, Pauline Sarvis, Iva Thompson, and Alberdena Vancil.
