Like all goat people, we get asked “why do you show goats?” This comes after we describe the miles we are planning to drive, the days taken off of work, the list of tasks that have to be completed before the trailer pulls out in some too-short time frame. They ask about the prizes, the fame, the money - what is the reason we goat people pour everything into this “hobby”?
For us, this picture has the reason. It is, and always has been and always will be, about family. Our dairy goat project started when the oldest Larson kid wanted a horse and was told no. 🙂 The dairy goat herd that resulted from this instead was been built on the idea that whatever you choose to do, you work at with all your might. These animals have taught us dependability, patience, endurance, love, work ethic, and resilience. And through it all, we have had the honor of working with animals that love unconditionally and do their very best in every aspect we ask them to. This picture has awards that we weren’t expecting and for which we are so grateful (right goat, right judge, right day, right competitors), but more importantly, this picture is about the people, the family, that is the heart of all that we do. What is like owning a National Champion? It is nearly impossible to describe in mere words, so hopefully the smiles say it all. This community is the most precious award of them all and the national spotlight is simply an opportunity to stop and look at the people surrounding the moment and be so very thankful for each and everyone of them, the part they played, the work they did, and the family that will remain the foundation - ribbons or not.
