Turn Off Outdoor Watering by Labor Day to Support Fall Salmon Runs🐟

Clackamas River flows are typically lowest in late summer, when water demand remains high.

The state sets minimum river flows to support river health, including salmon populations. During summer, the minimum flow is 650 cubic feet per second (CFS), but that requirement increases to 800 CFS in September to support the fall runs of Chinook and coho salmon.

One of the most impactful things you can do to help protect river levels is to turn off outdoor watering by Labor Day.

Maintenance on Valley View Reservoirs Underway

Reservoirs serve as the initial storage for treated drinking water before it’s distributed to homes and businesses. Over time, the protective coating on the Valley View reservoirs has worn down. This month, we're cleaning and re-coating the roofs of both reservoirs to ensure the longevity of our water storage. Work began this week and is expected to be completed by the end of September.

Rivers Are Running Low; Reducing Outdoor Watering is the #1 Way to Help

This year, we’re seeing historic low flows in the Clackamas River. As we head into the last stretch of summer, we’re asking for your help by reducing outdoor watering.

Summer water use spikes during the warmer months, when our source, the Clackamas River, sees its lowest flows. Lawn watering is a major driver of increased summer demand.

If you do opt to water, do it wisely!

-Water in the morning or evening, when evaporation is lower
-Water no more than 1 inch per week

Oregon continues to experience the effects of low snowpack and drought. While Oak Lodge continues to provide safe, reliable drinking water, conserving water helps reduce pressure on our water supply during periods of high demand. Reducing outdoor watering, especially lawn irrigation, is one of the most impactful actions you can take.

As you tackle summer chores, remember that every drop of water that washes away from your home can impact our rivers and streams. Our storm drains DO NOT filter water, meaning that fertilizers, trash, and chemicals flow straight into our waterways.

Here are some easy tips to maintain your home without harming water quality:

🌱 Scrape moss when it’s warm and dry: It’s easier to remove, reducing the need for treatments containing metals in the fall and winter.
🌿 Maintain a water-wise lawn: Avoid herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers that can leach into our waterways.
🧹 Sweep instead of pressure washing: This keeps pollutants on the ground from reaching waterways. If you do pressure wash, aim the spray towards grassy areas, not pavement.

It's hot!🌡️That means water demand is high at a time when rivers are already running lower than normal.

Here are a few ways to conserve water during the heat:

💧 Water only in the morning or at night, when evaporation is lowest
💧 Consider letting your lawn go dormant for the season. It takes a lot of water to keep grass green in the heat!
💧 Sweep driveways, sidewalks, and steps instead of hosing them off
💧 Head to a car wash that recycles its water instead of washing at home

Did you know that sweeping rather than pressure washing on your property can protect our lakes, rivers and streams?
Although convenient for cleaning surfaces, pressure washing can send dirty runoff containing oil, soap, chemicals, metals, and sediment into the storm drain system.
Remember: only RAIN down the storm drain!
