The bear at the foot of the front steps has been greeting people since before most of us started working here. He’s carved from wood, stands tall next to the rail, and he’s been photographed more than anyone on the property.

The Ranch House sign over the door says est. 1875. The string lights are on by dusk, and the leaves on the tree out front are turning yellow.

We're 12 miles from Yosemite's South Entrance, so most guests stay a night or two on either side of the park. This is the part where you sit down for a while before the next early start.

A recent MSN piece on a family-friendly Yosemite itinerary named Sierra Sky Ranch one of the writer's favorite hotel picks — and made an argument we happen to agree with: skip staying inside the park, and stay south instead, around Oakhurst.
Here's what's actually here: 30 acres, 28 rooms split between the Ranch House and Guest House, a Great Room with stone fireplaces that's been standing since the 1870s, and a fire pit that gets going most evenings with S'mores kits at the front desk. We're 12 miles from Yosemite's South Entrance — Highway 41 runs straight there.
