ON THIS DAY IN 1986, the radio airwaves went silent in a way no listener could ever forget, when rock and radio icon Jane Dornacker tragically lost her life in a helicopter crash during a live traffic report for WNBC 66 AM in New York.
🎙️💔

Before taking to the skies, Jane was a Bay Area legend.
She fronted the rock band Leila and the Snakes, wrote the hit song "Don’t Touch Me There" recorded by The Tubes, toured with the band, performed stand-up comedy, and played Nurse Murch in the iconic 1983 film The Right Stuff.

Known for her sharp wit and razor-fast delivery, Dornacker moved from San Francisco to New York to become WNBC’s beloved, raspy-voiced "trafficologist."

Just six months prior in April 1986, Dornacker had survived her first helicopter crash when her aircraft went down in the Hackensack River. Reflecting on that survival, she'd said:

"I'm a strong swimmer. I swam from Alcatraz to Aquatic Park twice, but it's different with a 2-ton helicopter strapped to your waist."

But on that fateful afternoon, while broadcasting live over the Hudson River for WNBC-AM, her Enstrom F-28F helicopter suffered engine failure, stalled and plunged into the water from an altitude of 70ft.
A million listeners heard her final, frantic words:

"Hit the water! Hit the water! Hit the water!"

Though pulled from the wreckage by rescuers, Dornacker died en route to Saint Vincent's Hospital at age 39.

Pilot Bill Pate survived with severe injuries.

The investigation later revealed that a mechanic had "inadvertently" installed the wrong clutch, an unauthorized part not meant for that aircraft.

Jane Dornacker — gone way too soon, but not forgotten.
