Last step…picking up the bales and hauling them in. They will be stored to feed the animals next winter. It’s been a cold spring and unfortunately the hay didn’t yield as well as past years. Hopefully next cutting will be better🤞🤞🤞

When the hay has had time to dry after raking, it’s time for the third step in making hay…baling! The wind rows are swept up into the baler and when there’s enough for a bale, it is wrapped in net wrap. The end gate of the baler lifts up and the bale rolls out.

Second step for making hay is raking. After the hay is mowed, it is allowed to dry for a couple days, depending the weather conditions. The drying conditions have been perfect this year, with sunshine, a great breeze, and low humidity. The top is dry so now the hay is raked. It’s the process of flipping it over so the bottom is brought to the top to dry. The rake puts the hay into rows (called wind rows) so the baler is able to pick it up to be made into bales. That will happen later this afternoon.

Mowing hay tonight. Hay is mowed, dries a few days, then raked into wind rows, then baled. This will feed the animals throughout the winter. Dan is working into the night to finish mowing. Please remember to slow down and be respectful when farmers are on the roads. They work long hours, and don’t like being on the roads, but it is necessary as they move from field to field. They are just doing their job and helping to feed the world. Thank a farmer today!!!🚜🚜🚜
