Million Dollar Highway near Bear Creek Falls - 1909 // Otto Mears was known as the Pathfinder of the San Juans. He built 450 miles of toll roads that later became most of the modern roads in southwest Colorado. Among these was the famous Million Dollar Highway. Construction of this road was initially started by the Ouray and San Juan Wagon Road Company in 1880. By 1882, though progress was being made on the road, the company was also running out of money. At this time, Otto Mears offered to purchase interest in the company and the road was completed in 1883. Mears furthered his investment by charging a toll. He made sure the road narrowed at Bear Creek Falls, about three miles south of Ouray, to prevent anyone from evading his toll bridge.
