Fall is coming to the San Juans.

You can already feel it in the mornings, see it in the first hints of gold, and sense it in the changing light along the Million Dollar Highway.

Soon, this road just south of Ouray will be surrounded by glowing aspens, cool mountain air, low clouds drifting through the passes, and some of the most unforgettable scenery of the year.

Fall in Ouray is brief.

The weekend starts with a good breakfast.

If you’re heading into the San Juans, hitting the trails, taking a Jeep into the high country, or just easing into a slower Sunday morning, brunch at The Smokehouse is a pretty good place to begin.

Fresh fruit. House-made favorites. Hot coffee. Bloody Marys. And enough fuel for whatever the mountains have in mind.

We get ready for it.

The pumpkins come out. The hay bales stack up. The colors warm. The mornings cool down. And before long, the aspens begin to match everything around them.

Happy Labor Day from Ouray Riverside Resort.

Labor Day always feels like the unofficial turning point in the mountains.

Summer isn’t gone quite yet, but you can feel the shift.

Cooler mornings. Longer shadows. The first hints of gold in the aspens. A little more quiet along the river.

Soon, the San Juans will trade summer green for autumn color, and before long, winter will begin making its way back into the high country.

For now, we’re enjoying one more long weekend by the river.

Here’s to the season behind us, the one just ahead, and all the reasons to keep coming back to Ouray.

In just a few weeks, the San Juans will start trading summer green for gold.

The high country changes first. Then the color works its way down the mountainsides, through the valleys, along the roads, and into town.

It’s brief.

It’s unpredictable.

And every year, it feels a little bit magical.

The smoker is ready, the tables are waiting, and there’s nothing quite like ending a day in the San Juans with a plate of slow-smoked BBQ.

Ribs, brisket, pulled pork, classic sides, craft b**r, cocktails, and a mountain evening that deserves to be enjoyed slowly.

Join us Thursday through Saturday from 11 AM–9 PM.

Ouray looks a little different from two wheels.

The roads twist tighter. The canyon walls feel taller. And every stop along the way feels earned.

For motorcycle travelers making their way through the San Juans, Ouray Riverside Resort makes a pretty great place to call it a night.

Fall in Ouray has a way of reminding you who really lives here.

The town sits tucked inside the Uncompahgre National Forest, surrounded by steep canyon walls, pine forests, rivers, and wildlife that often wanders much closer than visitors expect.

Our deer are part of daily life here. You may see them crossing Main Street, moving through neighborhoods, or grazing near the river.

That’s part of what makes Ouray special.

It’s also a reminder to give wildlife the space and respect they deserve.

Please slow down when driving through town, never approach or feed wild animals, keep dogs under control, and remember that even familiar-looking wildlife is still wild.

Fall is one of the most beautiful times to experience Ouray. Crisp mornings, changing aspens, quieter roads, and moments like this that make the San Juans feel a little different from anywhere else.
