Mt. Rainier is looking fine this fall! 😍

PSA: Summer has left the chat and chlorophyll is OUT. Xanthophylls, carotenes, and anthocyanins are IN.

As daylight shrinks and temperatures sink, fall is officially fashioning up on the mountain—and it's giving looks courtesy of chemistry. Plants have been preparing for abscission (aka “cutting off”), restricting the movement of sugars between leaf and stem. As chlorophyll breaks down, other pigments finally get their moment in the spotlight: xanthophylls pop off in gold, carotenes in orange, and anthocyanins in red.

Heading to the trail? Time for a fit check! Keep an eye on the forecast, bring layers, and pack the 10 Essentials. Remember: there’s no bad weather, just poor preparation.

Every fall serves something different, with weather, drought, and early frost shaping the season’s palette. What looks will you be serving?
