“We stayed at Cumberland Falls RV Resort over a holiday weekend, and from the moment we arrived, we knew we had found a special place. We had never visited the area before, so we spent quite a bit of time researching campgrounds that would meet our family’s needs—full RV hookups, a beautiful setting, and family-friendly activities. Cumberland Falls RV Resort did not disappoint!

The resort is clean, peaceful, and absolutely beautiful. We especially appreciated the thoughtful little shop, which was so well stocked and came in handy for a few things we had forgotten at home. Our family also loved spending time on the pickleball courts, which quickly became one of our favorite activities during our stay.

The location is wonderful, giving you easy access to the area while still feeling quiet and peaceful when you return to the campground. But what truly made our stay special were the owners. They were incredibly kind and welcoming and treated us more like family than guests.

We are so grateful we found this little gem and will absolutely be staying here again the next time we visit the area. Thank you for making our holiday weekend such a memorable one!

Wow, what an ABSOLUTE BLAST of a weekend at Cumberland Falls RV Resort! 🎉

Looking out across a SOLD-OUT park, our hearts are so full. With 242 acres of beautiful property to explore, the golf cart rentals were a massive hit all weekend long! From the bustling camp store and competitive pickleball matches to the peaceful hiking trails, scenic lake views, and cozy evening campfires, the energy was unmatched. 🪵✨

More than anything, we want to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who stayed with us. Our park is filled with families and individuals with true values, kindness, and integrity. You are quite simply the best kind of people, and we are incredibly proud to be your hosts!!! ❤️

Did you know that Cumberland Falls RV Resort sits on some of the most prime real estate in the country?

🌊 LESS THAN A MILE FROM THE FALLS!

We directly border the state park and sit less than a mile from Cumberland Falls itself. Experiencing the "Niagara of the South" is something you will never forget. A staggering 3,600 cubic feet of water crashes over the sandstone edge every single second! The sheer size, massive water flow, and thunderous roar will leave you completely awestruck. For the ultimate bucket-list adventure, you can actually take a raft ride directly to the face of this true natural wonder, feeling the cool mist on your skin and the raw power of the river below! 🌊🛶

🎸 THE LEGEND OF TOMBSTONE JUNCTION! 🚂

Best of all, our brand-new resort is built directly on the hallowed grounds of the legendary Tombstone Junction! Back in the '60s, '70s, and '80s, this property was a booming, world-famous Western theme park. When you camp here, you are walking the exact paths where outlaw country music legends like Dolly Parton, The Judds, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson once took the stage! Today, our popular golf cart trail runs right along the historic, hallowed tracks of the famous "Old #77" steam locomotive. You are literally camping on a piece of American history!

“This is one of the nicest RV parks I’ve stayed at. The hosts/ owners are friendly, helpful, and very welcoming to everyone. Everyday they come by and checked to make sure everything was okay and if we needed anything. The park may be small but it has large, clean and level lots with full hook up and the Wi-Fi worked great. The golf cart trail was very enjoyable. We enjoyed having a picnic under the rock ledge. Thank you. See you next year!

At Lick Creek Falls in Kentucky, you’ll find one of the Bluegrass State’s prettiest “blue waterfalls!” Hidden in Daniel Boone National Forest near Whitley City, this beautiful waterfall drops about 60 feet from a sandstone cliff into a clear pool surrounded by tall rock walls and thick forest. Reaching it is part of the adventure, with the popular out-and-back hike covering about 5.4 miles. Along the way, you’ll pass through quiet woods, beneath rock overhangs, across creeks, and down a steep stretch that drops more than 300 feet in about half a mile. The trail also gives hikers access to nearby Princess Falls and connects with the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail. The Sheltowee Trace became a National Recreation Trail in 1979 and is marked with white diamond signs showing a turtle, while its name comes from the name given to Daniel Boone by Shawnee Chief Blackfish. Keep an eye out for Eastern newts in the damp woods as well. Spring and the days following steady rain are usually the best times to see Lick Creek Falls flowing strong and the pool below showing off its beautiful blue-green color.

“Great RV park just a mile from Cumberland Falls! Large, full hook up spaces that are easy in, easy out, well marked, and well appointed. Each site has a picnic table with an umbrella, a fire ring, and Adirondack chairs. This is a newly created RV park so the trees in the spaces are still growing. In a few years there should be plenty of shade as the owners have planted many nice trees throughout. The surrounding land features old growth forest, borders Daniel Boone National Park, and did I mention Cumberland Falls is just around the corner? 🙂

This RV park also has a hiking trail to a lovely fishing lake with more picnic tables/umbrellas, perfect for a quiet picnic in the woods. There’s also a pickleball court, horseshoes, outdoor connect four, and a pavilion with a communal grill. The camp store was also well stocked with all the little things people sometimes forget to pack. And they have a good selection of beer and liquor too.

The owners of Cumberland Falls RV Resort are very welcoming and friendly. We were even given a welcome gift when we arrived with a s’mores kit, maps of the area, park info, and dog treats. They were the perfect hosts and even delivered the firewood to our site.

We highly recommend this campground for anyone looking for a quiet stay in a prime location.
Service: 5/5 | Location: 5/5

Nearby activities
Lots of hiking trails close by and Kentucky’s Niagara Falls is a mile away.

Noteworthy details
The park is located on the old Tombstone Junction land.

🌊 THE DEAFENING BLIND BEND: The 1780 Legend of Zachary Green 🌊

In the brutal winter of 1779, long before asphalt roads and luxury campers existed, frontiersman Zachary Green and his crew of four seasoned trailblazers pushed off into the unmapped, treacherous upper stretches of the Cumberland River system. Accompanying them were two fierce Plott Hounds—shaggy, deep-chested hunting dogs whose low growls served as the expedition's only radar in a landscape thick with hidden dangers.

Their mission was crucial to the westward expansion of the American colonies. Tasked with scouting navigable water routes down the river basin, the crew was transporting vital homesteading supplies downstream to early pioneer settlements developing near what would eventually become Nashville.

The wilderness they entered was staggering in its scale. Over half the forest canopy was dominated by massive, ancient American Chestnut trees. Even in winter, the forest floor was carpeted with their prickly hulls, and the men regularly foraged for sweet, storable chestnuts to roast over their night fires. This dense canopy created a biological paradise, providing a massive bounty of food that supported an abundance of wildlife.

Hunting was constant and vital. The crew survived on a heavy frontier diet of elk, white-tailed deer, and lean wild hogs tracked through the snow by the hounds. When ammunition ran scarce, they relied on lines dropped into deep river bends to pull up fat catfish and native trout.

But they were not the only predators tracking the game. Tale has it early in the journey, while dressing an elk carcass on a rocky riverbank, the dogs suddenly broke into a frantic, snarling bay. Out of the dense brush burst a massive, battle-scarred black bear, driven mad with hunger by the harsh winter. It lunged directly at a younger crew member! Zachary didn't have time to aim his rifle; he dropped the weapon, drew his heavy iron-forged hunting knife, and threw himself forward alongside the dogs. The brief, bloody melee ended only when the bear was driven back into the thicket, leaving Zachary with a shredded leather sleeve and a gripping reminder of the territory's raw hostility.

Human threats also loomed large. The upper basin was a volatile crossroads between the Cherokee and Shawnee nations, and navigating these waters required a delicate balance of diplomacy and iron nerve. At a trading encampment near the river's fork, Zachary successfully traded to***co and lead shot for valuable winter pelts and dried corn. Yet, two nights later, the peace shattered. Alerted by the low whine of the hounds, the men awoke to a silent ambush by a hostile splinter band. Arrows whistled through the dark, thudding into the oak walls of the flatboat. A fierce, close-quarters skirmish erupted under the starlight before the frontiersmen could cut their mooring lines and drift into the safety of the midnight current.

🛑 The Climax: The Deafening Blind Bend 🛑

By February 12, 1780, the worst of the journey seemed behind them. The winter snows had melted rapidly upstream, swelling the river and giving the crew a welcome break from the grueling rowing.

The 30-foot oak flatboat drifted effortlessly, carrying its heavy cargo of pelts and black powder. The men relaxed a bit on the deck, sharing roasted chestnuts, while the two hounds lay sleeping in the bow. But the river was deceptively dangerous. When the water level is up, the Cumberland becomes a thundering, fast-moving expressway.

Because the river was in a massive flood stage, the entire upper river was already a roaring, turbulent monster. The deafening sound of the rushing high water bouncing off the sandstone canyon walls created a terrifying sensory illusion: the ambient roar of the swollen river completely drowned out and masked the specific sound of the waterfall ahead. There was no distinct, distant rumble to warn them; the background noise was already a constant, localized thunder.

The crew was already furiously battling the current just to keep the heavy timber boat on track and prevent it from slamming into the half-submerged banks. As they swept around the slight, blind bend, the channel suddenly broadened dramatically. The river expanded to a gargantuan 300 feet across, swallowing the beaches and banks! Because of the curve and a dense column of white mist rising ahead, the horizon looked perfectly flat—a lethal optical illusion.

Suddenly, the Plott hounds bolted upright, their ears pinned back, letting out a panicked, howling alarm. At that exact moment, the flatboat accelerated into a frantic, unstoppable sprint. The wide river simply vanished into thin air just yards ahead—plunging into a roaring, 65-foot vertical abyss!

“Row for the bank! Row!" Zachary screamed, throwing his weight into the heavy steering oar.

It was useless. The immense volume of high water had them in a vice grip, dragging the heavy oak flatboat directly toward the massive 300-foot-wide white horizon.

With the edge mere yards away, the boat began to tilt. In a last-ditch effort to save their lives from the unknown, massive danger, the men abandoned the vessel.

“Jump!"

Zachary grabbed the collars of both hounds and dove into the freezing, rushing torrent. The crew was instantly swallowed by the white water. They were violently tumbled through the current, fighting the immense drag of the river as it sprinted toward the drop.

Gasping for air, Zachary slammed into a slick, submerged sandstone boulder right at the very lip of the falls. With freezing water roaring over his shoulders and his legs dangling over the 65-foot height, he lunged out, his fingers clawing desperately into a narrow crack in the slippery rock. One by one, the men fought the current, scrambling over each other in a frantic, bone-chilling struggle to clinch onto the boulder, locking arms to form a human chain just feet from the edge.

From their precarious, slippery perch, they watched in absolute awe and terror as their massive 30-foot flatboat tilted over the swollen, 300-foot-wide ledge, plunging down into the thundering maelstrom below.

Against all odds, the heavy oak timbers held together, washing through the violent whirlpools at the base to drift into calmer waters downstream, where the freezing, exhausted crew eventually recovered it intact. They had survived the treachery of the river to become the first colonials to witness the untamed, majestic power of Cumberland Falls.

🚐 The Modern (and Way More Comfortable) Adventure! 🚐

Fortunately, exploring Cumberland Falls today requires zero knife fights with winter-crazed black bears, no close-quarters frontier skirmishes, and absolutely no clinging to slippery rocks for dear life. In fact, you can skip the whole "accidentally floating over a 65-foot vertical abyss" part entirely.

Welcome to Cumberland Falls RV Resort, the ultimate gateway to Cumberland Falls and the spectacular, vast sandstone arches that cover McCreary County! Located less than a mile from the falls, we are officially the closest RV park to the action.

While Zachary Green’s crew had to sleep on water-logged oak planks, you can pull your massive rig right into our big-rig friendly, 60-to-100-foot sites featuring ALL FULL HOOKUPS (30/50 amp, water, and sewer). We are completely pet-friendly, too, so your modern-day hunting dogs can lounge in luxury instead of barking frantically at impending doom! 🐾

Want to explore the wilderness without the grueling frontier rowing? Rent one of our golf carts and smoothly cruise the historic Trail of the Ole 77, winding right through our beautiful 240-acre RV destination park along the very route once traveled by the famous Tombstone Junction steam engine! 🚂

Ditch the survival rations, leave the flatboats at home, and come experience the wild spirit of Cumberland Falls with all the modern comforts Zachary could only dream of! 🏕️✨
