Below is a copy of a Thank You note received by our New Braunfels, Texas, Unit for the Schultüten that the Unit presents to the First Graders at Cross Lutheran Church and School each year. This tradition copies the the German tradition of presenting a cone full of goodies and school supplies to young children who are attending school for the first time.

Yesterday, August 23, 2026, was the 90th Birthday of our fraternal brother Richard Ordorfer. Below is a picture of then National Chairman Randall Ratje presenting Brother Odorfer with the banner of the newly formed Prince Solms von Braunfels Unit of New Braunfels, Texas, at the August, 2011, National Convention in St. Louis, MO. Happy Birthday Richie and thank you for your service to the Steuben Society of America!

As we approach the 250th anniversary of American Independence, we should proudly remember the German Americans who played pivotal roles in The Revolutionary War. In addition to Baron von Steuben, there was Mary Ludwig Hays (a/k/a Molly Pitcher), and General von Kalb. But a name not often mentioned is Bartholomew von Heer, a Pennsylvania German who commanded von Heer's Light Dragoons.

Von Heer's Light Dragoons served as the Provost (Military Police) Regiment for the Continental Army. In addition to their other duties they served as Washington's Bodyguard Unit until the end of the war.
