Fall on Pawleys has a way of reminding us why we do this. The quiet after a full season. The island finding its rhythm again. The satisfaction of knowing the inn is full of celebrations even while we’re away.

We are grateful for this place, for the people who love it, and for you. Thank you for being part of The Pelican family.

The first issue of our updated newsletter hit your inbox this morning. Enjoy!

The season may be closed, but The Pelican is anything but quiet.

This time of year, the inn transforms into something else entirely. The same porch that held lazy summer mornings and unhurried afternoons becomes the backdrop for first dances and forever promises.

The marsh dock where guests watched the sun go down all summer long becomes the place where two people begin something new.

The table we set every morning for breakfast gets dressed up for something a little more celebratory.

Weddings at The Pelican come in all shapes. Intimate ceremonies with just the people who matter most. Larger celebrations that spill across the property and into the October light. What they all have in common is the feeling of this place - warm, unhurried, and quietly extraordinary in a way that no amount of decoration could manufacture.

Our off-season calendar is full of love stories this year, and we couldn’t be more honored to hold space for every single one of them.

We have some news about The Pelican Post, and we’d love your input.

After years of finding our way into your inbox every month, we’re slowing down a little. Starting this fall, The Pelican Post moves to every other month with more depth, more story, and more of what makes this place feel like home.

We’re dreaming up new things for each issue. Recipes with the stories behind them. Local favorites you won’t find in any travel guide. A peek at life at the inn between seasons. The history and folklore of this island we can’t stop loving. And more of Bruce, whether he likes it or not.

But before we get too far down the road, we want to hear from you.

This newsletter has always belonged to our community as much as it belongs to us, and your voice matters here.

What do you love most about The Pelican Post?

What have you always wished was in it?

Drop it in the comments. We’re reading every word.

The guests have gone. And a different sort of work begins.

What most people don’t see is what happens the weeks after Labor Day; the deep cleaning, the painting, the mending of all the small things that a full season of living puts through its paces. We have been pulling linens, assessing every corner of this place with fresh eyes and honest ones.

It’s hard work. We love it.

Because what comes next matters just as much as the season itself.

The Pelican doesn’t sleep for long. Weddings, family reunions, retreats; the off-season gatherings that fill these rooms with a different kind of joy, a different kind of celebration. And this place deserves to meet every single one of them at its very best.

There is something deeply satisfying about caring for a building this old, this full of history and memory. About knowing that the work you put in now will hold space for someone’s wedding toast, someone’s family photograph, someone’s moment they’ll talk about for the rest of their lives.
We take that seriously. We always have.

If you’ve been thinking about gathering your people here in the off-season, now is a beautiful time to reach out. We’d love to make it happen.

BUTTERY CROISSANT BREAD PUDDING

From The New York Times / Originally published in 2015 / Updated in 2025

Yield: 8 to 10 servings

1 pound croissants (about 5 to 7), split in half lengthwise
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, more for baking dish
1 bunch scallions (6 to 7), white and light green parts thinly sliced, greens reserved
¾ pound sweet Italian sausage, casings removed
2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh sage
8 large eggs
3 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
8 ounces Gruyère, grated (2 cups)
1 ¼ teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon black pepper

Heat oven to 500 degrees. Spread croissants on a large baking sheet and toast, cut side up, until golden brown, 5 to 10 minutes (watch carefully to see that they do not burn). Let cool, then tear into large bite-size pieces.

In a medium skillet over medium-high heat, warm the olive oil. Add sliced scallions and sausage meat; cook, breaking up meat with a fork, until mixture is well browned, about 5 minutes. Stir in sage, and remove from heat.

In a large bowl, toss together croissants and sausage mixture. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, 1 ½ cups cheese, salt and pepper.

Lightly oil a 9- x 13-inch baking dish. Turn croissant mixture into pan, spreading it out evenly over the bottom. Pour custard into pan, pressing croissants down gently to help absorb the liquid. Cover pan with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight.

When you’re ready to bake the casserole, heat oven to 350 degrees. Scatter the remaining grated cheese over the top of the casserole. Transfer to oven and bake until casserole is golden brown and firm to the touch, 45 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes. Garnish with sliced scallion tops before serving.

Labor Day weekend. Here we are again.

There is something about closing up a season that feels less like an ending and more like a long exhale.

The Inn gave everything it had this summer, and so did we. And somehow, standing on the other side of it, all we feel is grateful.

Grateful for the table that was never quiet. For the guests who arrived as strangers and left feeling like something more. For another summer on this island that asks nothing of you but your presence and rewards you with everything else.

We’ll be back. We always come back.

If you’re new here, welcome. We’re so glad you found us.

This little corner of the internet is where we share what life at The Pelican actually looks like - the stories, the food, the island, and all the small things that make this place feel like home.

If you want a little more of that delivered straight to your inbox, we’d love to have you. Our newsletter, The Pelican Post, is the most personal way we know how to stay in touch between seasons.

Our next newsletter arrives soon and you won’t want to miss this one.

There’s a particular kind of August afternoon that belongs only to the coast.

The air sits heavy and warm, the days stretch long and golden, light spilling across the porch well past dinnertime - the marsh going copper in the early evening, the beach still holding the heat of the sun long after it’s dropped below the horizon.

This is the deep end of summer. The richest part of it. The weeks that always seem to move the slowest and go the fastest all at once.

We find ourselves noticing everything a little more carefully this time of year.

Labor Day is coming. The season will close, and we’ll say our goodbyes to another summer that gave us everything.

But not yet. Right now the days are still long, the table is still full, and the hammocks are still swaying.

We’re gearing up for a big weekend!

60 years of the Pawleys Island 4th of July Parade…

The Pelican has its own way of doing the 4th, and honestly, we think we’ve got it figured out. It starts with breakfast and a Bloody Mary and mimosa bar (because that’s just good sense) then we take to the streets for the parade, fuel back up with Cooper’s barbecue, and stand on the beach with our necks craned to the sky waiting for that fighter plane flyover.

Goosebumps. Every. Single. Time.

And then we nap. Collectively and without apology.

Happy 4th, Pawleys Island. Here’s to 60 more!
