Santa Fe National Forest and Bat Conservation International to restore springs damaged by Hermits Peak Calf Canyon Fire
(Santa Fe, NM, June 4, 2026) — The Pecos-Las Vegas Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest, working with Bat Conservation International (BCI), will begin restoring six of 12 natural spring sites damaged by the Hermits Peak Calf Canyon Fire.
The springs, located across San Miguel and Mora counties, provide important water sources for wildlife and support healthy watersheds and rangelands. Many of these sites were damaged during the fire and are no longer functioning.
Planned work includes:
• Repairing or rebuilding spring boxes
• Installing new buried pipelines
• Adding or replacing water troughs or small storage tanks
• Rehabilitating existing structures
• Building fences to keep livestock out of sensitive spring areas
