One of my paintings at the Mother Road Exhibit at Amarillo Art Institute. It is available until October. If you are interested in purchasing, contact the Gift Shop at (806)354-8802
It was painted on a peaceful afternoon at the Pecos River Cabins as part of one of the Plein Air Painters of NM Mother Road paint outs. Turns out that some of the cabins were there and in use during the early days of the Route 66 hey day. From what I understand, the cabins were a favorite place to take a rest from the road along the rippling river.

Keeping the feeders full and loving the fall blooming flowers available as many hummers are coming to the property on their way south.
.

Hummingbird migration season is getting underway across New Mexico as the tiny birds begin their annual journey south for the fall.

New Mexico sits along important migration routes through the Southwest, and late summer into fall can bring plenty of activity. Black-chinned, broad-tailed, rufous and other hummingbirds may be spotted as birds move toward wintering areas farther south.

If you have a hummingbird feeder, there’s no need to take it down to encourage the birds to migrate. The Cornell Lab says hummingbirds will migrate regardless of whether feeders remain available, and keeping them up can provide an extra source of energy for birds passing through. Feeders should be cleaned regularly and filled with a mixture of 1 part plain white sugar to 4 parts water.

So if it seems like you’re suddenly seeing more hummingbirds around the yard in the coming weeks, there could be a good reason — fall migration is underway.

Pecos sunflowers are particular about where they grow. Found in only a handful of areas in New Mexico and Texas, the bright yellow blooms thrive near saline or alkaline wetlands, including Santa Rosa's ciénega.

The Pecos Sunflower Festival, September 12–13, celebrates the rare flower with bird-watching, art, live music, kids' activities, and more. 🌻

Submit Your Comment to Protect Roadless Areas!

The federal government has opened a public comment period for just 33 days on a proposal to rescind the Roadless Area Conservation Rule and strip protections from 45 million acres of America's last wild forests, including 1.6 million acres right here in New Mexico.
