Some traditions are passed down, and some are thrown over state lines 🐟
The Flora-Bama Interstate Mullet Toss is this weekend on Perdido Key, and if you're unfamiliar with this quirky tradition, let us fill you in.
Every year, hundreds of beachgoers step up and take their shot at tossing a mullet (the fish, not the hairstyle) across the Florida–Alabama state line, all chasing bragging rights for the farthest throw. What started as a joke in 1985 has become one of the biggest events on the Gulf Coast! 🎉
And it's all for a good cause. Proceeds from every mullet tossed go to support local youth charities.
In case you're wondering, mullet are a plentiful bait fish in our area, and no, they're not alive when thrown. In fact, after they've been launched over the state line, they're donated to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo for their alligator friends (if you're catching our drift) 🐊
