Big news for Camp Daggett! We are incredibly grateful to the Charlevoix County Community Foundation for awarding Camp Daggett a $7,000 Environment & Land Use grant to support shoreline protection efforts on beautiful Walloon Lake.

This funding will help install a stormwater retention basin and retaining wall designed to reduce erosion along Camp Daggett’s swimming beach, protect the shoreline, and improve stormwater runoff management after major rain events. Materials for the retaining wall were generously donated by Manthei.

As Camp Daggett continues celebrating over 100 years of outdoor education and camp experiences, projects like this help preserve the waterfront and natural environment for future campers, students, and community members to enjoy for generations to come. Thank you to everyone helping us care for this special place!

Big improvements are happening across Camp Daggett ahead of Summer Camp season! ✨

Thanks to the incredible generosity of George and Susan Loesel and the Doll-Loesel Foundation, new bunk beds and mattresses are being installed across campus, helping create a more comfortable and welcoming experience for campers this summer. Their support has impacted Camp Daggett for decades, helping fund projects including the Adventure Center, girls bathhouse, kitchen renovations, campus signage, and now camper sleeping spaces.

As we prepare to welcome campers for our first week of Overnight Camp on June 14, cabins are also receiving new epoxy flooring and refreshed spaces to make camp feel even more like home.

We are deeply grateful not only for this generous gift, but also for the volunteers and service clubs who help assemble bunks, maintain cabins, and prepare campus each year for campers to arrive.

Camp Daggett is beyond blessed to welcome the inspired original art of Julie Stratton, a contemporary impressionist painter from Boyne City, to the 22nd Annual Camp Daggett Golf Benefit, June 25 at Walloon Lake Country Club.

The SOLD OUT event features a lively auction preceding dinner that will include Stratton’s view of Camp Daggett’s stretch of Walloon Lake waterfront during its century old tradition of overnight camp. The oil on canvas piece reflects Stratton’s signature style of bold, colorful brush lines and community focus. Her vibrant, joyful spirit is captured in this piece.

Stratton has a background in architecture but her true love has always been the arts. Her paintings are found in many private collections around the country. We are excited to welcome Julie and her husband Charlie to the event to celebrate and share in the excitement of the auction.

Boyne City Kiwanis Club hosted the 21st Annual 5th and 10th grade Eddie Essay Breakfast celebrations on April 16 and 23, to celebrate the winners of the annual Eddie Essay “Writing for a Cause” contest. Students in fifth and tenth grades from Boyne City Schools, Boyne Falls Schools, and Concord Academy were asked to write an essay answering the question, “If you had $100 to give to your local favorite charity which one would it be and why?”

Landon Sutherland, Lucas Doumanian, and Riley Theil wrote essays on their experiences at Camp Daggett and each earned an Honorable Mention award!

Sophomore Aiyanna Burns, took home the grand prize win with her heartfelt tribute to Camp Daggett.

“Has an experience ever hit you so deeply that you wished everyone could feel it for themselves—something that truly changed your life? For many people, that could be an amazing trip that they went on, or even a college that they attended. For myself, and for hundreds of other children and families, that place is Camp Daggett. Camp Daggett’s motto is “The Other Fellow First.” It is a place of community and memories, where kids can go be themselves, with no pressure from the world to change, other than for the better,” she wrote.

Aiyanna, her family, and Camp Daggett executive director Julie Joles celebrated the awards with the other contest winners at breakfast catered by Chef Cole and the Boyne City Schools Hospitality Class. The students and the Kiwanis Club then presented three $100 checks and a $500 check payable to Camp Daggett! Such a wonderful celebration of talented youth and the impact of local non-profits!

At the close of the April 16 event, club members presented Camp Daggett with an additional $1,000 in support of the scholarship fund!

Kiwanis is a civic organization that focuses on the health and education of children. The club’s three main pillars are Heath & Nutrition, Reading & Literacy, and youth Leadership Development. Eddie Essay is the Boyne City Kiwanis Club’s signature event.

Ed Leverenz retired in July 2023 after over 20 years on staff at Camp Daggett. He served as Lodge Manager, Facilities & Maintenance Manager, and Office Manager. One of the many things he established is an apple orchard honoring longtime volunteers and Trustees of Daggett that had passed away. He grew the trees from seeds. Currently, the trees honor David Smith, Bub Neidhamer, Clark Ketchum, Mike Hills, Pat McFall, and Ed Hennessy. In his honor, the Board of Trustees has named the orchard the “Ed Leverenz Orchard.”

He visited this week with former Executive Director Brent Marlatt, who prunes the trees, and the duo planted a new one. This one started as a seed in Ed’s upstairs apartment at Camp Daggett. It has grown over the past five years to stand about four feet tall. During its journey from seed to orchard, it has lived with Ben McMurray, son of adventure staff member Laurie McMurray, and most recently retired Development Director Grace Ketchum. About 12 trees now grace the orchard! Marlatt said, “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best is today.” Thank you both for growing Camp Daggett.
