⚒️ NO BROTHER WALKS ALONE
To the Brother who still pays his dues... but rarely comes to Lodge anymore:
Can I ask you something?
What happened?
I'm not asking to criticize you.
I'm not asking why you aren't doing more for your Lodge.
And I'm certainly not here to give you a lecture about your obligation to attend.
I genuinely want to hear your story.
Maybe life got busy.
Maybe your health changed.
Maybe work became overwhelming.
Maybe there was conflict in your Lodge.
Maybe you stopped feeling welcome.
Maybe you became discouraged with Freemasonry.
Maybe nobody noticed when you stopped showing up.
Or maybe you've simply been going through something and withdrawing became easier than explaining it.
Whatever the reason, I'd like to hear it.
And I'll go first.
🔨 SOMETIMES A BROTHER JUST NEEDS SOMEONE TO MAKE THE FIRST MOVE
A good friend and Brother of mine had been having a difficult few years.
Age and health were catching up with him, and I gradually noticed that I rarely saw him at Lodge or Chapter anymore.
There was always a reason.
Nothing dramatic.
Just life.
One day before Lodge, I called him.
I asked what he was doing the next day.
He gave me the usual answer:
A little of this. A little of that.
So I said something along the lines of:
“Well, I'll pick you up. You can ride with me to Lodge.”
Nothing profound.
No intervention.
No lecture.
Just a ride to Lodge.
And true to his word, when I arrived the next day...
there he was.
Ready on time.
Dressed in his Sunday best.
We went to Lodge.
Had a good meeting.
Shared a decent meal.
Enjoyed the Brotherhood.
And then something happened on the drive home that has stayed with me.
He thanked me.
Not the quick:
“Thanks for the ride, Brother.”
It was slower than that.
Sincere.
“Thank you, Brother... I needed that.”
Then he opened up.
He told me he'd been down in the dumps.
He had started making excuses not to go anywhere.
Not Lodge.
Not Chapter.
Not much of anything if he could avoid it.
But when I called?
He wouldn't turn down a Brother.
And here's the beautiful irony:
His dedication to Brotherhood helped him when he wasn't quite able to help himself.
I thought I was simply giving my Brother a ride to Lodge.
What he actually needed was for somebody to reach out first.
🤝 THINK ABOUT THAT.
It cost me nothing.
Actually, that's not true.
I gained something.
I got his company.
We talked.
We laughed.
We attended Lodge together.
We broke bread with our Brothers.
And somewhere in something as ordinary as one Brother picking up another...
a man who had been withdrawing from the world started finding his way back into it.
Today that Brother attends regularly again.
He looks forward to Lodge.
He's getting out.
He's reconnecting.
He's moving forward.
And it started with something unbelievably simple:
“I'll pick you up.”
⚒️ BRETHREN, SOMETIMES RETENTION ISN'T A MEMBERSHIP PROBLEM.
Sometimes it's a human problem.
We spend enormous amounts of energy asking:
How do we get new members?
How do we grow the Lodge?
How do we improve attendance?
Those are worthwhile questions.
But maybe occasionally we should open the membership list and ask another one:
“Who haven't I seen lately?”
And then...
call him.
Not:
“Why haven't you been coming to Lodge?”
Try:
“Brother, how are you doing?”
Maybe invite him for coffee.
Offer him a ride.
Ask him to come for dinner.
Tell him you miss seeing him.
Give him a reason to put on his good clothes and get out of the house.
You may discover that the Brother who appears to have walked away from Freemasonry...
has actually been waiting for Freemasonry to notice he was gone.
And Brethren, that's worth thinking about.
🌿 NOW I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU.
Especially from the Brothers who still pay their dues but haven't attended Lodge regularly for some time.
What happened?
What made you stop going?
What would make you want to return?
Was there something your Lodge could have done differently?
Did life simply get in the way?
Did someone hurt you?
Did you stop finding value in the meetings?
Or did you quietly slip away...
and nobody ever called?
Tell us.
No judgment.
Your story might teach an active Lodge officer something he desperately needs to understand.
And I'd also love to hear from the other side.
Have you ever reached out to a Brother and helped bring him back?
Has a Brother ever done that for you?
Share that story too.
Let's remind one another just how little it sometimes takes to practice the Brotherhood we talk so much about.
And if you're reading this while you're down in the dumps yourself...
Brother, you don't have to explain everything publicly.
You don't need to pretend everything is fine either.
Call somebody.
Message a Brother.
Ask for that ride.
You don't have to carry every burden by yourself.
And for the rest of us?
Look around your Lodge.
Notice the empty chairs.
Behind one of them may be a Brother who doesn't need another dues notice.
He might simply need to hear:
“Brother, I've missed you. How are you doing?”
Sometimes Brotherly Love isn't complicated.
Sometimes...
it's just making the first move.
⚒️ NO BROTHER WALKS ALONE.

Leadership is not confined to a title or a station. It appears in the tone we use, the promises we keep, and the example we set when it would be easier to take the lower road.

Lead in a way that gives others something worth following.
