Pilot K**b Public Hike - 10/03/26

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff and volunteers will lead two guided hikes to the top of Pilot K**b National Wildlife Refuge in October. The public hikes will be held on Saturday, October 3rd. Hikes will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Hike participants will meet at the Battle of Pilot K**b State Historic Site. During the hike, staff and volunteers from Mingo National Wildlife Refuge will discuss how past mining has created critical habitat for endangered Indiana and Northern Long-eared bats. This important refuge, with unique geology and mining history, provides hibernation habitat that continues today. Space is limited; participants must pre-register to reserve their spot for the hike by calling the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service office at Mingo National Wildlife Refuge at 573-222-3589. Hikers will walk up steep terrain with loose rocks and uneven footing. Participants must be physically able to make this hike. Waking up to the sunrise over Pilot K**b Mountain.
Mornings like this are a beautiful reminder of just how incredible life can be. The peacefulness, the beauty, the way the sun slowly lights up Pilot K**b Mountain,it’s simply breathtaking.
Definitely one of those views that makes you stop, take it all in, and feel grateful for the moment.

We went for an early morning hike on the Scour Trail, and it turned out to be quite an adventure! Somehow, we managed to get a little off the trail, but it gave us some great views of Taum Sauk Power Plant and the Scour Channel .
We ended up walking over lots of rocks, through the water, and some tall weeds. Thankfully, we didn't see any snakes—but the mosquitoes definitely found us! 🦟
It was a fun hike overall, but don't forget the bug spray!

PARK CLOSURE UPDATE 07/16/26:

The day-use area and campground at Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park will reopen at 8 a.m. on 7/16/2026. The Campground Store and River Store will return to normal operating hours on 7/17/2026.

At this time, the following areas and services will remain closed due to flood damage:

· Multiple sections of the campground trail system

· The Black River Trail connecting the campground to the day-use area

· North Day-Use Area

· Full-Service Cabins 707 – 712

Please be advised that staff is still removing much of the flood debris within the day use. Please do not cross barricades and ropes indicating the closure of an area for your safety.
Also be advised if you plan to visit during busy times such as the weekend, we are about 100 parking spaces shorter than normal. Understand that during high visitation days will require more walking to the shut-ins area. To avoid the crowds, please visit Monday-Thursday.

Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with our neighbors just south of us who have been impacted by the devastating flash flooding, especially everyone at the campgrounds.
We're praying for the families affected and for the safety of the brave first responders and water rescue teams working tirelessly to help others. We're incredibly grateful for all they do!

My husband and I checked in around 9:00 p.m.
The lady working at the desk was very nice she made you feel welcome!
Our room was extremely clean
There were plenty of towels and washcloths.
Our bed was comfortable.
Very quiet, we slept as if we were at home!
We stay there when we are in Pilot K**b!
I might add there is a very nice clean pool !
Restaurants are great!
Nearby activities :Bicycle riding, hiking, near by state parks, historic sites
Walkability:Fort Davidsons park is
across the street
Food & drinks: Plenty of restaurants in the area
Noteworthy details: Small,quiet clean town, With plenty of places to shop. There is a huge bike trail! State Parks Friendly town who welcome visitors
