A cairn is a man-made pile (or stack) of stones. The word cairn comes from the Scottish Gaelic: càrn [ˈkʰaːrˠn̪ˠ]
Cairns can be found throughout history & in nearly every corner of the earth.

The act of adding a small stone to a cairn, especially on a hilltop, is a deep-rooted Scottish tradition that signifies respect.

Native American tribes used stacks of rocks to mark burial sites, create memorials and mark trails.

Scholars have speculated that Cairn practice could be a form of worshipping, but it's agreed that they mainly a gesture of asking or wishing for good fortune to be bestowed on the stacker and his/her family. Each stone within the stack represents a particular wish and possibly, family member.

Cairn are a common motif in Zen gardens, which seek to create order out of nature's seeming chaos. In doing so, they highlight the harmony and balance of our place in the world.

Personally, I find something deeply satisfying about stacking stones. This the Cairn I found today built by a guest & left to enjoyed. Thank you to the builders. 🙂

Waiting patiently for the hill to shine yellow. Forsythia is a welcome sight after a long winter.

Forsythia is the perfect shrub to treat a classic case of spring fever. That’s because they’re among the earliest flowers to emerge. Branches burst with golden yellow flowers before the leaves bud, usually about the same time that daffodils and other spring flowers are also budding.
If you’re interested in growing them, they’re an easy shrub to maintain. Without a lot of fuss you will sunny blooms year after year.

The forsythia varieties that we commonly see as part of the landscape are Forsythia suspensa and Forsythia viridissima, regarded as the “founding members of the forsythia family” as they were the earliest of the genus to be brought west from the Far East.
By 1880, a cross between the two resulted in a new species, Forsythia x intermedia, which is another common species seen today.
Our largest on the hill is Forsythia x.
