Quick status update on the cottage renovation. Framing for the living room ceiling/2nd floor is complete. I'm ready to install the subfloor upstairs. Probably need to rebuild the stairs first though. Had to rip them out for a bunch of reasons. But before I replace the stairs, I think I'll re-do the breaker box as it is located on one of the old stair stringers. This tends to be how these things unfold. One project begets another, and it just cascades from there. I'm just focused on my next step, eventually it all converges

Been quiet for a bit. Still going full steam ahead with the cottage remodel. Currently working on replacing structural members that weren't supported in any meaningful way. Lots of temporary supports and patience is the key

A quick update on the cottage renovation. I'm halfway finished with removing and replacing the entire floor structure between the upstairs and downstairs. The floor was criminally underbuilt, very wobbly, and completely out of level. I ripped down one half, and then replaced it, all new framing, all new subfloor. Now I'm in the process of doing the second half. Once the floor is done, I'll move upstairs, remove the entire roof, add new walls to bring the ceiling height of the 2nd floor up to a normal height, then rebuild the new roof on top of the new walls. Nothing worth having comes easily

Custom-making some board and batten siding for the renovation at the cottage. It's a simple and time tested siding for any building, just simple boards arranged vertically on the exterior of the structure with thin strips covering the gaps between the boards. It'll last an eternity if it's protected from the elements and maintained correctly. The downside is, you can't just go buy it at Home Depot. You have to know an Amish guy that doesn't have a phone number to mill up all the hemlock for you. His name must be Hamish or Geunther, or something equally as ethereal
If you're like me, and you are splicing the new siding into old siding, then it's probably a good idea to go ahead and pre-stain everything with a matching stain. It's pretty hard to find oil-based stain anymore, but in my opinion, there is literally no other choice for wood that is going to be outside. So that's exactly what I did with all of these. Everything got a liberal coat of a matching oil-based stain to what's on the cottage now, and now it needs to drive for about 3 days and then I can trek it up north and put it to use

Summer is here, and we're putting in the hours at the other house at the Haggerty Hollow. Still not sure what to call it- Cottage? Farm house? Rustic Abode: the sequel?

The renovation is well under way at the farm house at the Haggerty Hollow. We're ripping down the plaster and lath in the living room. Also, we've started finishing the new drywall in the bathroom. (Bonus photo of a flock turkeys seen in the side yard of the house as we worked)

A quick video of the raising of the frame for the entryway sign. Thankfully everything went into place pretty smoothly. The excavator was the absolute perfect choice though. The top being weighed somewhere around 600 lb, as it is made from solid 8x8 White Oak
