The BROWN PELICAN is one of the most recognizable birds along the Texas coast. If you're out on the water around Port Aransas, you'll often see them gliding just above the waves or diving headfirst into the Gulf to catch fish.

Brown pelicans spot fish from the air and plunge into the water from above. Special air sacs beneath their skin help cushion the impact.

They often fly inches to a few feet above the water, using air currents created by waves to help them glide efficiently.

What is this thing? It is actually the bottom half of what is called a semi submersible oil platform. It is essentially a giant floating structure that is towed offshore and anchored in place while it drills for oil. This one is decommissioned and being cut into pieces.

The Port Aransas ferry has been around for more than a century. Ferry service between the mainland and Port Aransas dates back to 1911, when a privately owned ferry called the Mitzi carried automobiles across the channel.

It's completely free! The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) operates the ferries, and there is no toll to cross.

They run day and night. The ferry system operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, weather permitting.
