It is with very heavy hearts that we say goodbye to a longtime friend and member of the Port Inn family, Joey Jernigan.

Joey, Lori, and a large part of their family stayed with us for many, many years before eventually making Port St. Joe their home. They came back every year without fail, usually several times during scallop season, to get out on the bay, enjoy the town, and spend time together as a family.

After enough years, people stop being customers and just become part of the family.

For those of us who have been at the Port Inn a long time, that is exactly what happened with the Jernigans. After nearly 17 years here, I was lucky enough to see their family come through our doors year after year, watch friendships grow, and eventually see them become a real part of this community.

And when Joey and Lori moved to Port St. Joe, they did not come here just to retire and enjoy the beach and the quiet.

They came here to work.

They came here to get involved, meet people, invest in a business, support the community, and help make this place better. They became involved with the Chamber, local boards, the Polar Plunge, and helped grow what has become a huge local farmers market. If there was something going on in town, there was a good chance Joey and Lori were somewhere in the middle of it.

They did not just move to Port St. Joe.

They became part of Port St. Joe.

And that is something we will always be thankful for.

We are thankful that all those years ago, Joey and his family chose the Port Inn. Thankful for the scallop trips, the visits, the conversations, the laughs, and all the years that turned customers into friends.

More than anything, I am thankful that we got to be there for the beginning of Joey and Lori's story in Port St. Joe and that, in some small way, the Port Inn got to be part of it.

To Lori and the entire Jernigan family, please know how much Joey meant to all of us here and how much he will be missed.

Once part of the Port Inn family, always part of the Port Inn family.

Rest easy, Joey.
