In 2014, the Cape San Blas Lighthouse was moved to George Core Park (right on the St. Joseph Bay waterfront) after years of coastal erosion and major storms crept closer to its foundations. Instead of letting a historic beacon collapse into the Gulf, the community lifted and relocated it—turning a threatened landmark into an easy, bayfront stop in downtown Port St. Joe.

This skeletal iron tower is the latest in a long line of Cape San Blas beacons that guided mariners and local fishermen past shoals and shifting sandbars for generations. Today, when the lighthouse is open, you can climb up—then step back out into the park where calm, shallow bay water often mirrors the sky for some of the best sunset reflections.

Cape San Blas Lighthouse (200 Miss Zola’s Dr) is a late-1800s iron “Sanibel class” skeletal lighthouse—relocated and rebuilt on the St. Joseph Bay shoreline in 2014. The black-and-white spiral tower rises about 101 feet, and the climb rewards you with wide-angle views across the bay, marshes, and out toward the Gulf Coast.

Before Port St. Joe existed, a boomtown called St. Joseph ruled this bay—and then vanished almost overnight.

In the mid-1830s, St. Joseph rocketed from sandy shoreline to one of Florida’s busiest Gulf Coast ports, shipping cotton, building warehouses and hotels, and even hosting the 1838 convention that drafted Florida’s first constitution. For a brief moment, this was a “next big city” on the frontier.

Then came 1841. Yellow fever swept in during a single season—likely carried by mosquitoes that arrived with ships, long before anyone understood how the disease spread. Accounts describe high fever, jaundice, and terrifyingly rapid decline. Families fled, businesses shuttered, leaders died, and the town’s momentum collapsed.

Storms and fires finished what the epidemic started. The charter was repealed, trade shifted elsewhere, and dunes and scrub slowly reclaimed the streets. Today, the quiet shoreline hides the grid of a lost city—one of the few lasting witnesses is the old cemetery, where weathered stones mark the people who lived the boom and died in the outbreak.

During World War II, America’s shipbuilding machine ran around the clock. Liberty ships—standardized cargo vessels built to replace ships lost to U-boats—became the backbone of Allied supply lines. By shifting from riveting to welding prefabricated sections, construction time dropped from about 355 days (and 1.4 million work-hours) to roughly 42 days (about 500,000 work-hours). Nearly 2,700 Liberty ships were built—and every one of them depended on a massive network of yards, ports, and repair hubs to stay in the fight.

That’s where Port St. Joe’s waterfront story fits in: shipbuilding and repair here tied local workers into that national, 24/7 rhythm—scaled down from giants like the Brooklyn Navy Yard, which operated on three shifts and handled thousands of repairs. It’s a powerful reminder that wartime production wasn’t only happening in famous mega-yards; it also lived in hardworking coastal communities like ours.
