A notable article in the Detroit Free Press' Travel and Resorts section highlights the entrepreneurial spirit of F. B. Stebbins, who transformed his passion into a thriving tourist attraction at the historic Old Lighthouse in Presque Isle, 20 miles south of Rogers City off US-23. Interestingly, the lighthouse was said to have been designed by Jefferson Davis as his inaugural project upon graduating from West Point Academy. (later disputed). Although the revolving light was operational between 1840 and 1870 before being abandoned, Stebbins, a former Lansing resident, purchased the tower and meticulously restored it over a period of 39 years, incorporating relics from the seafaring era.

This postcard captioned 'Birches in the Park, Stebbins Dock, Grand Lake, Presque Isle, Mich.,' showcases a significant location in the area's history. In 1879, Francis R. Stebbins constructed a family cottage near the southern end of the Grand Lake Hunting & Fishing Clubhouse of which he was a member. The Birch Hill Hotel and Birch Hill store were subsequently named in honor of the abundant birch trees that thrived in this region at the time. What is the significance of the reference to the Park?

Cartographic representations serve as a repository of memories and narratives. The emergence of Michigan's early resorts in the late 19th century was facilitated by the expansion of railroad networks, Great Lakes steamships, and a growing affluent class. These individuals sought refuge "Up North" to escape industrialized city heat, breath fresh air, and seek health treatments at natural springs. Located on this map is Fireside Inn, Grand Lake Hotel, Presque Isle Lodge, Birch Hill Resort and Harbor View Hotel. Some are now gone but locations are not forgotten with the aid of maps.

This old postcard with 'Grand Lake View' written on the front really shows how the Dip between Grand Lake and Lotus Pond got its name, and it's fascinating to see the topography of the area in a bygone era. The Road Commission later raised the road and put a culvert in, which significantly altered the landscape and changed the way people traveled through the area. It's amazing to think about the history behind this simple postcard and the stories it could tell if it could speak! 📚🏞️

This photograph of Grand Lake, dated October 6, 1908, is particularly noteworthy in light of the Metz Fire, which occurred just nine days later on October 15, 1908. The exact vantage point of this image remains unknown. The first fire towers, constructed by the Michigan Department of Conservation during the 1920s, played a crucial role in detecting forest fires. Notably, Eli Gilmet manned the Presque Isle Township fire tower from 1927 to 1939, vigilantly scanning the horizon for signs of smoke from his elevated post. Perhaps, the fire tower existed prior to Eli's tenure.

Notably, the reduced friction on iced roads enabled a single team of horses to pull substantial weights, sparking intense competition among loggers to create record-breaking 'brag loads' and earn recognition. The meticulous documentation on this vintage Alpena logging card reveals a horse weight of 2900 lbs., a log weight of 26,688 lbs., and 6 cords of wood.
