Start your engines! The Put-in-Bay Sports Car Races are back!

From September 15–17, Put-in-Bay will celebrate its rich racing history with three days of vintage sports cars, two days of racing, a car show, the Original Course Tour, Rocker Cover Races, and plenty of family fun! This year’s featured marques celebrate the Cars of Great Britain.

The tradition dates back to 1952, when sports cars first raced around Put-in-Bay’s original 3.1-mile road course. Today, the event keeps that history alive in the true vintage spirit of sports car racing!

Throwback Thursday: Heineman’s Winery & Crystal Cave

We’re looking back at more than a century of w**emaking history on South Bass Island!

Heineman’s Winery was founded in 1888 by Gustav Heineman, an immigrant from Baden, Germany. By 1900, it was one of 17 w**eries operating on Put-in-Bay, thanks in part to the island’s ideal grape-growing conditions and Lake Erie’s tempering effect.

When Prohibition began in 1919, much of the island’s grape and w**e industry disappeared. Heineman’s, however, found a way to continue. Under Gustav’s son, Norman, the family sold unfermented grape juice and offered taxi service and tours of the w**ery’s caves.

Today, Dustin Heineman continues the family w**emaking tradition, following generations before him. The Heinemans and other local growers cultivate 20 acres of grapes on the island, including two of South Bass Island’s major varieties: Concord and Catawba.

From 1888 to today, Heineman’s Winery remains a special part of Put-in-Bay’s history and island tradition.
