🌵Six Miles From Main Street, a Hidden World Comes Alive Every Winter🏜️
You know Quartzsite for the RV Show, gem shows, and more. But there's a side of this town most visitors never see — hiding in plain sight, just a few miles down a dirt road.
Were talking about the 11,400 acres that make up the La Posa Long-Term Visitor Area (North, South, West, Tyson Wash combined) — plus the five free 14-day camping areas at Plomosa Road, Hi Jolly, Dome Rock, Scaddan Wash, and Road Runner. These are most popular September 15 through April 15. It’s enough desert to swallow a small city. And every winter, it does.
Who shows up:
🎙️ QuartzFest — a week of ham radio classes at Roadrunner BLM camp every January. 500 operators, one patch of desert.
🚚 Truck Camper Adventure Rally — the largest truck camper gathering in the world. Hundreds of rigs at Roadrunner Wash every February, up from just 47 at its start.
🚌 SkooliePalooza — a winter homecoming for school bus and van conversion owners.
🚍 Bluebird Wanderlodge Rally — Bluebird motorcoach owners circle their coaches at La Posa South for two weeks of tech talks and potlucks.
🏕️ Rubber Tramp Rendezvous (RTR) — thousands of nomads gather each January for free workshops on solar power, budgeting, and life on the road.
🔥 Boomerville, DOVEs, Xscapers, and the Boondockers BOF (sub-groups of Escapees RV Club, a private membership organization for full-time RVers) — turn Plomosa Road into a small city overnight, with campfires, group dinners, and disaster-relief training.
🚐 Newmar Kountry Klub — an annual rally for Newmar owners (all brands welcome), boondocking together during RV Show week.
👥 WINs (Wandering Individuals Network) — one of the largest singles' groups in the desert.
🏍️ Off-road and OHV riders — informal meetups fill the trailheads.
🎉 Xscapers New Year's Eve — a potluck-and-music bash under more stars than most people have ever seen.
And that's just the named groups. Dozens more brand clubs, singles groups, and friend circles quietly claim the same corner of desert every winter — no flyer, no website, just word of mouth and a spot they've held for years.
