Seneca was born around 4 BCE in Córdoba, in present-day Spain, and grew up in Rome. He became a philosopher, writer and statesman during one of the most dangerous periods in Roman history. He had wealth, influence and access to the emperor, yet he spent much of his life thinking about a question most people avoid: how can we live peacefully in a world we cannot control?
His life was full of contradictions. Seneca taught people to live simply, yet he accumulated enormous wealth. He wrote about remaining calm, yet he lived close to the centre of political power, where one mistake could cost him everything. These contradictions make his life worth studying, not just his philosophy.
His defining problem was this: How do you protect your inner peace when your happiness depends on things that can disappear overnight?
Seneca served Emperor Nero, but their relationship eventually became dangerous. After years away from public life, he returned to Rome and became one of Nero's advisers. When he later fell out of favour, he tried to withdraw from political life. In 65 CE, Nero accused him of involvement in a conspiracy and ordered him to take his own life. Seneca died by forced su***de, facing death in the manner described by ancient historians.
Seneca was influenced by earlier Stoic philosophers, especially Zeno of Citium and Chrysippus. He also learned from Epicurean thought, even though he was a Stoic himself. He believed philosophy should not be an intellectual decoration. It should help people deal with anger, fear, grief, wealth, ambition and death.
Outside politics and philosophy, Seneca loved reading, writing, reflection and conversation. He wrote essays and letters that explored how to use time wisely, control anger and prepare for uncertainty. His Letters to Lucilius remain widely read because they speak about problems that have not changed much in two thousand years.
The hardest lesson of Seneca's life was that knowing what is right and living by it are two different things. His own life did not always match his teachings. But his writings still ask us to examine our actions rather than use knowledge as a substitute for change.
One of his most famous lines comes from On the Shortness of Life:
“It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it.”
Seneca's life reminds us that time is not something we can save for later. Every day spent chasing approval, worrying about what we cannot control or postponing the life we want is a day we never get back.
The goal is not to live forever. It is to stop wasting the life you already have.
