In Michigan, spending a day on Lake Superior at the “Black Rocks” at Presque Isle is one of the most scenic spots you’ll find to enjoy a day cooling off anywhere in the Upper Peninsula! Located inside Presque Isle Park in Marquette, this dramatic stretch of shoreline is known for its dark, ancient rock ledges, bright blue Lake Superior water, and rugged views that feel wild even though you’re still close to town. The rocks here are about 1.7 billion years old and are made from dark volcanic rock, which gives the shoreline its bold black color against the clear water.
Trails wind through much of the park and bring you to overlooks, wooded paths, shoreline views, and the popular Black Rocks area, where a small pebble beach sits tucked near a large rock outcropping. In summer, people spread out along the beach, watch the waves roll in, and cheer on brave jumpers leaping from the rocks into the cold, clean water below. Lake Superior stays chilly even during warm weather, so the plunge is part of the adventure. Presque Isle Park covers more than 300 acres on a forested peninsula reaching into the lake, giving you plenty to explore before or after swimming. Whether you come for cliff jumping, a picnic by the water, a quiet walk, or just those unforgettable Upper Peninsula views, Black Rocks is one of Marquette’s most beautiful places to spend the day.
