Jennifer Denny brought a lively book talk to Great Camp Sagamore, sharing her novel, Calculated Risk, and stories from her life and work in the Adirondacks.

A conservationist, NYS Guide, and Adirondack 46er, Jen has extensive experience working and spending time in the Adirondacks. Calculated Risk follows an Assistant Forest Ranger who heads into the backcountry while facing some big decisions in her life.

A true Adirondack woman, Jen was a wonderful part of Women in the Woods, sharing her knowledge, answering questions, and helping make the week meaningful alongside the women who came together for the program.

Great Camp Sagamore is located in Hamilton County, the least densely populated county east of the Mississippi River. This October, Sagamore is offering several opportunities to learn more about astronomy, the night sky, and our connection to the cosmos.

The programs will be led by astronomer Aileen O’Donoghue, PhD, and astronomy educator John F. Rusho. O’Donoghue, a professor of physics at St. Lawrence University, brings her background in radio astronomy and research on galaxies, stars, and the universe. Rusho has spent decades studying and teaching astronomy, building telescopes, and sharing his knowledge with students and astronomy groups throughout Central New York.

Their programs and lectures offer opportunities to learn about the night sky, the origins of the universe, darkness, stargazing, and the science behind what we see above the Adirondacks.

Dan Berggren performs traditional Adirondack folk music, sharing regional history, and stories at Great Camp Sagamore.

More than 100 years ago, Sagamore gardener George Wilson created tables, bookcases, writing desks, and other pieces using twigs and tree roots.

Nearly a dozen of Wilson’s pieces are now on display at Great Camp Sagamore, where they were originally made.

Tonight, join Dr. Connor Williams for a special viewing of the collection and a conversation about George Wilson, his craftsmanship, and the natural materials he used to create these one-of-a-kind pieces.

Women in the Woods is happening at Great Camp Sagamore this week, continuing a long-standing tradition of women gathering to explore the Adirondacks together.

From Sept. 19-21, 1986, Drs. Barbara Glaser and Anne LaBastille led the eighth year of the program, along with Sue Norris, Ann Beck, and Helen Quimby.

“This workshop will create a safe, supportive, and stimulating setting for women to relate to the wilderness in a variety of new ways. Through such experiences as outdoor challenges, ecology, hikes, nature art, slide presentation, storytelling, walks, canoeing, etc., we as women will join together to explore the unique and special dimensions of ourselves, each other, and the woods and water of the Adirondacks.”

Women in the Woods continues at Sagamore today, bringing women together for hiking, paddling, wilderness skills, yoga, nature walks, storytelling, and time outdoors.
