Throwback Thursday!

In 1993, Great Camp Sagamore guests spent a weekend trekking through the Adirondack Forest Preserve alongside llamas. Led by Sagamore Board Member and llama expert, the late Tony Cashen, the unique adventure included a picnic lunch, a history tour, and hands-on experience caring for these curious pack animals.

From the 1993 Sagamore Historic Adirondack Great Camp Program Catalog.

Did you know National Llama Appreciation Day is observed annually on June 21? This unique program remains a standout chapter in Great Camp history.

Today we celebrate National Trails Day and want to recognize the volunteers who help keep Great Camp Sagamore's trails safe, beautiful, and accessible.

A special thank you to John Friauf, now in his 11th season as SMA Trail Steward, and to Chris and Ned for today's work on the Power House Trail. The team removed an old culvert that had become both an eyesore and a hazard, and improved the trail entrance and exit areas.

Their dedication helps visitors enjoy over 12 miles of trails through the heart of the Adirondacks. Thank you, John, Chris, and Ned, for your continued stewardship and hard work!

Curiosity, connection, and new skills came together at Great Camp Sagamore with our Women’s Beginner Fly Fishing Bootcamp, presented in partnership with the “Becoming an Outdoors-Woman” (BOW) Program run by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

Guided by BOW instructors and FFI Certified Fly Casting Instructor Cari Ray, participants learned the fundamentals of fly fishing, including casting, knot tying, reading water, and finding fish, while pursuing wild, native Brook Trout in the Adirondacks. A memorable weekend of discovery, confidence-building, and connecting to the natural world.

Additional outdoor learning opportunities will continue throughout the season at Great Camp
Sagamore through partnerships with the NYS DEC BOW program. Upcoming programs include
“Trailwise Women: Backcountry Basics 101”, and a Women’s Paddling Retreat.
